XP from Travel: 5 hr layover in Frankfurt
Is this enough time to do anything in the city itself? I had an 8 hour layover in Amsterdam several years ago & took the opportunity to see Anne Frank House & some of the Rijksmuseum; much better than moping in duty free. This is my stop going from Boston to Chennai; MIL's cancer has metasticised so not exactly a happy trip. Thanks for your help.

Re: XP from Travel: 5 hr layover in Frankfurt
I don?t really know what there is to see in Frankfurt, but you could probably go to a cafe. That said, I don?t think I?d want to deal with the stress of getting to and from the airport and finding something. I?ve done it once, when we took the train and I just felt majorly stressed by the whole thing.
I think it's enough time to see a few things. I remember it took us way longer than expected to get to the city from the airport by taxi (around 30-45 minutes I think) but we did the same thing you're thinking of. We didn't have a layover, but we arrived 3 or 4 hours before my mom's flight and decided to go see a couple things.
We just wandered the city a bit, saw the European central bank, and that's about it. We were glad we did it though as the city had a pretty cool feel to us.
ETA: Dealing with having to get back through security I'm not sure I'd want to leave the airport though. Realistically from the time you get out of the airport and to the city (maybe an hour after landing) you'd have a few hours since you'd need to be back at the airport at least an hour before your next flight to get back through security. Just my thoughts.

FRA security is easy to get though, just finding the right termnail and getting to the gate is a hassle, especially with little ones. You might get lucky and there is usually a fest or farmers market to go though, and the Bahn is right there, if you decide to leave the airport, get your train tickets early, you can same some Euro.
You can't buy the S-bahn tickets early. You could take the ICE and get those tickets early, but TBH it isn't really worth it, it would only save you like 20 mins or so.
What day of the week are you arriving on (good markets are on Wed-Sat)? Are you arriving in Terminal 1 or 2? Terminal 2 will add on about 10-15 mins onto your journey. It is a 15 Min S-bahn ride from Terminal 1 to Hauptwache (main shopping area). What would you like to see? The Old part is nice and you can easily walk down to the Main from there.
With a 5 hour layover, I'm not sure I would do it because you would have to go through security all over again. Some parts of that airport are tricky and once I went through the wrong way and had to go through security twice.
Let me know if you have any questions!
