at what point did they figure out Alex was lactose intolerant?  Elle is completely on milk now and is totally constipated--we have given suppositories which work but I am wondering if the milk is the issue.

Re: **jill**

  • They've actually never said that Alex is lactose intolerant. The listing in her medical records is "chronic constipation", but I'm fairly certain it's the milk. She was fine with any other form of dairy, but as soon as we switched to milk (so around 11-12 months), she got backed up, and bad. The nurse in the office said her son went through the same thing, and grew out of it by 2. She has gotten better in the past month or two too. She hasn't had a screaming poop in a long time, so that's fantastic, and we haven't had to use a suppository in months. We also have droped her daily milk intake considerably, and give her a lot of water mixed with a tiny bit of juice (1 to 4 ratio of water to Motts for Tots, since that's watered down too). It helps keep her system hydrated and alleviates a lot of the blockage issues.

Instead of the suppositories, have you asked about Miralax until you can get things figured out about whether you want to continue giving Ellle cow milk? We try to just up her daily dose of Miralax if she hasn't gone in 3 days. By the third day she's usually into painful stage, and by day 4 we're on to the suppositories or there will be tearing.

Has your pedi  given you any other suggestions?

  • I haven't talked with her doc yet--of course we were gone for the weekend when this happened.  I had a feeling it might but wasn't sure.  I am going to call in the am just to see, I got back to work Tuesday and don't want this to go unresolved.  elle is happy enough and loves the milk--she is just not a big eater and will hardly drink juice or water so we keep giving her milk so at least she has some calories daily.

  • That's how we felt with Alex. Other than that one issue, she was fine. Not uncomfortable until a few days had passed. Ask about Miralax to avoid the suppositories as often. I know a few people who will have to take it for life due to various issues, and the doctors say it doesn't mess with the system like regular laxatives do, so you can give it to her until whatever is going on resolves itself. Alex is still on the same size dose as she started out on over a year ago, so something is working for her to not need more due to her size increase. Hopefully she'll be able to get off it somewhat soon.

Keep me posted on what your pedi says. I'd be interested to hear another view on it since Elle and Alex seem to have the same thing going on.
