I am house boring!!!! (so ignore this if you don't want to know about house stuff!)
To be honest, I have never loved the exterior of our house. I knew it had potential but I just wasn't sure WHAT to do to pretty her up. I love love love shutters but DH really hates them. Tired of my whining he agreed to them and...OH MY GOD I love them. Here's the link to my post on the D&R board for pics -

We are having it painted when it is no longer 900 degrees outside and I am really nervous about that but I can't believe what a big difference the shutters made!

Love them!
No advice for you on the painting. I'm having a really hard time deciding on paint colors for the inside of our house. It's my first time to paint a house, and so far I've got one purple room and one orangey-red room. I think maybe I'm overdoing it.
Well, I know I love the purple room and I bet the person that sleeps in there loves it too!!! Which room is orangey?
Our tiny bathroom is orangey. It's technically "moroccan red," and it's only the top half of the room, because the bottom half is off-white tile. I think that makes it a little less overpowering, but we've still got some serious color going on. I grew up in an all-white house, so it's tough to know how to choose paint colors.
Our living room is red and green (not Christmasy...subdued colors), the dining/kitchen is buttery yellow, entry is cream and the same living room green, hallway bath is powder blue, and I have a Grimace-purple wall in my office.
Don't be afraid of color
Originally, the master bedroom was mint-green-blue, the master bath had navy/burgundy/hunter green paisley and taupe wainscoting, and a second bedroom was bright orange and lime green (teenager's room). The previous owners were also not afraid of (really tacky, awful) color, either.
Cream trim, Puppy? Is that too simple? It might lighten it up a bit, then you could keep the dark shutters but it would brighten the exterior a bit.
I am going to call our subcontractor tomorrow to have him get some quotes from Forest for a new garage door. I found one online that I LOVE but the company only does business in Houston. What d-bags.
And I agree Fuzzy - something more neutral like cream might make everything pop a bit better.
