Tell me about Fairlington

Anyone live in Fairlington? Do you love it?

Re: Tell me about Fairlington

  • I don't live there so take this with a grain of salt, but I did a lot of research because we were thinking seriously about a few places there. It seemed like a great community and I really liked how all of the units (at least the ones we saw) had full basements that gave you so much extra space. Ultimately, it came down to the parking issue for us- there was just not enough parking.. and combined with the lack of metro access, I felt like it would have been a big problem. It was built so long ago and just doesn't seem to have enough parking for the two-car households that exist today. We went with Cameron Station instead and are so happy here. We're a little further out down 395 and can't walk to Shirlington, but we have plenty of parking (at least in the section where we live) and have the metro.. and the same community-type atmosphere.

  • I live in Fairlington and love it!! I seriously never want to leave. We lived in an apartment for 3 years and now moved to a bigger two story place a few weeks ago. We have a great pool within 50 feet of our place as well as a tennis court and tot lot. There is a wonderful MOMS club and babysitting co-op. It's a great place to run and walk dogs. Neighbors are nice and considerate.

I've never had a problem with parking like PP said. But I think it varies throughout fairlington. I think North Fairlington has a better parking situation than South Fairlington. But neither is that bad. We had two cars before and we could park on the street or in a lot. Both were usually available. Now we have one car and that works fine. I take the bus to the Pentagon metro and have been doing so the entire time we have lived there. Shirlington is an awesome little neighborhood that we love to walk to or take a short drive.

I would be happy to answer any questions just PM me. Our apt for rent is actually on craigslist right now. I could send you the link if you are interested.

  • We have never lived there but have had friends who lived there and looked at the townhouses and condos when we were looking to buy. Pros: great community, walking distance to Shirlington, close to 395, lots of families, pet friendly and close to DC/Arlington/Alexandria. Cons: Small places (we mainly looked at the townhouses but the living room, kitchen, 2nd bedroom were all very small), no metro and I have heard parking can be an issue.

  • We live right by there and our nanny share family lives in Fairlington  (for a while I was taking DD there every other week).  I love the general area, and our nanny share family seems to really like it.  Where they were there was no issue with parking.  I love all of the trees and the amenities (lots of pools, tennis courts, rec center, playground).  The one drawback I see is that places are small.  There are very few 3 bedroom places.  That said, the other family has a very nice, renovated 2 bedroom, end unit townhouse and it seems fine for them and one baby.

My brother lived there for several years with his wife and young daughter.  This pretty much covers it.  My brother and SIL rave about living there.  I lived in Parkfairfax at the time, so it was fun to be "neighbors."

Re: the parking - my brother had one space assigned and they only have one car, so the only parking issue was when people come to visit, your visitors have to find parking on the street which can be tricky.

  • I completely agree with everything the pps have said.  We have lived in Fairlington for the last 4 years and absolutely love it.  We have a pool and tennis court just steps from our backyard.  There is a bunch of green space near our townhouse for our dogs to run.  And parking has never been an issue for us.  We live in North Fairlington and we have two cars.  Our parking lot always has open spots in it.  I do agree that the one drawback is the size....if you have a family, it would be hard to have room for multiple kids + dogs in the house.  We feel that we are going to stay here with two dogs until we have two kids that are mobile.  Feel free to PM me if you have any questions.
  • Thanks for all the feedback. DH and I walked through several units and really love the area. I think we will definitely keep it on our short list of options.
