Clicky poll, who picked out your ring?

I really need to get my wedding ring re-sized b/c I haven't been able to wear it since I got PG.  So, as I'm sitting here thinking about getting it re-sized I started thinking about the first time I got the ring.  DH was terrified that I wouldn't like it (I'm a bit picky about my jewelry), so he had me pick my own ring.[Poll]

  • It's actually kind of a funny story. He didn't want my input AT ALL. I LOVE my ring, especially my double-banded ring guard, but the engagement ring isn't something I would have picked. After we were engaged for a time, one of my good friends got engaged and her ring was EXACTLY what I would have wanted. He saw it and said, "Now that ring is just heinous. Too much. I don't like it." lol I asked him why he picked the ring he did for me and he said, "It's just your style. It reminded me of you... Simple. Plain." LOL

I was like, "Future husband of mine....... Please choose my key descriptors a bit more carefully next time." He was trying to say the ring was classic or timeless and that's what he came up with. bahaha

  • I was at a jewelry store with MIL and her friend so the friend could get some turquoise appraised. There was a lovely ring in the cabinet, and just for kicks, MIL had me try it on. It fit perfectly as it was, and it was exactly what I would have wanted in an engagement ring--unique, not a diamond, simple, but quirky.

I told H about it that evening, and how pretty it was (and cheap lol) and he went and bought it the next day, it would appear, and he held onto it for a whole year before proposing. I was quite surprised when he opened the box and it was that same ring. It was a surprisingly romantic gesture, given that romance isn't something we do well!

How thoughtful--I bet you were surprised!

H and I went to look at a few stores for engagement rings, but ultimately I let him pick what he wanted.  He has amazing taste in jewelry, so I was very pleased with what he picked.

  • I alternate 3 rings on my left fourth finger. For the first (my original wedding set) I narrowed it down to two rings and DH chose one. The second I got 6 years later and DH wasn't even there (I called before spending so much money, though, and we had been in the market for an "upgrade.") The third my great, great grandfather chose for my great, great grandmother. The gold has worn so thin on it, though, that I'm afraid to wear it too often. I need to go see if a jeweler can reinforce it in some way. Ten years is coming up fast, and I'd kind of like a non-diamond ring for that finger to wear sometimes---sapphire, perhaps?
  • Anytime we were at the mall, we would stop by the jewelry stores and just look at the engagement ring. We ended up picking one that we both loved. He ended up getting it about 6 months later and proposing.

It was really thoughtful, especially for him. He hid it in his mother's sock drawer at her house so I wouldn't find it lol.

  • Neither of us really picked out my ring.  We actually got my original ring from a lady that was divorcing.  She sold it for 1/4 of what it was worth and we just couldn't turn down such a good deal.  I knew it wasn't my style, but I was more concerned with the size of the diamond and the ring it could be turned into later.  I promised I'd wear it for 5 years and then I wanted a new setting that fit my personality better.  I lasted about 2 years (maybe 3) and I got to design my new ring and use my stone.

  • We picked out my first ring together - he picked out the second on his own.
  • I picked out three favorites, and H chose something completely different. Lol. We got engaged pretty quicky, and then married pretty quickly, so we didn't have much time to save. He recently upgraded my diamond, which was really thoughtful.

Love this! I have a garnet and diamond ring I wear on my right hand.  It is actually what I originally picked out for my engagement ring but DH thought that a nondiamond engagement ring would make him look "cheap."  ((rolling eyes))  We picked out a diamond ring and then he secretly bought the garnet ring and kept it in the jeweler's safe and gave it to me when he graduated law school.  I swear to God I have the WORST luck when I don't wear it.

I would like a sapphire as well.  And an emerald....I will take one of each, please.

Yep. We paid for our wedding ourselves, so we didn't have a ton of money for rings. H bought me a nice engagement ring, but let's face it, the stone was really small. H's aunt and uncle own a jewelry store in NH that's been in their family for years, so that's where we got our rings. When we were there for vacation in July, H had me give them my ring "to have it cleaned" one day, and when I got it back, the stone was 1/4 carat bigger! I obviously loved it to begin with, but the extra sparkle is nice. :)

Man, if I were you, I would suggest a vacation to NH once a year for the rest of your life LOL.  Congrats - surprises like that are so much fun!

That's so sweet! I'd love a surprise like that!

  • H picked out my ring mostly by himself. He asked my sister what he thought of the ring he'd chosen, but that was about it. I told him that I wanted a square cut, and that was the only thing I was "picky" about. I was quite surprised when he proposed with this 1.25 carat, three-stone ring...he nailed it perfectly.

He keeps saying my e-ring will go to JJ when he's ready to propose [in like, 50 years]. I love the ring too much to give it up though, even if I get an upgrade out of it.

  • I picked out my ring. And it turns out it was a good thing because as luck would have it, if he had picked out my ring, he would have picked out the one style that I always knew I absolutely, positively did not want.
