Maternity clothes question...

For you moms and almost-moms....  Did the size of maternity clothes you needed to buy change throughout your pregnancy?  I bought a few maternity shirts, some jeans, and a couple pair of work pants that I love, can wear now, but still have some room to grow a bigger belly into.

I'm wondering if I need to buy a size up, or I'll be able to get away with the same clothes for the whole thing.  If you had to switch sizes mid-stream, when did that point happen for you?  Thanks!!

Re: Maternity clothes question...

  • I was able to wear the same Old Navy size across the board.

  • So far I've been wearing the same sizes, mostly just my longer regular clothes but I also still have belly to grow. My friend got me 3 (regular) shirts that work well as maternity and got them in a large (I usually wear mediums), so I haven't worn them yet.
  • The only thing was I outgrew a pair of jeans but they were on the smaller side to begin with. I also found some shirts started to become to short in the end so needed to use my Bella bands again. Overall you should be fine.

  • I had to buy up a size in certain clothes like jeans. My t-shirts got snug in the very end and I was all belly. I bought maternity clothes at 20 weeks and most of them lasted throughout but it may depend on how you carry and how much weight you gain.
  • I was able to wear almost all of my regular clothes (pants with the Bella Band) until just a few weeks ago. The maternity jeans/pants I bought in my pre-preg size are still huge on me and most of the shirts are too. My Motherhood tees fit the best because of the ruching on the sides. I have 2-3 mat. dresses and those still fit well. They didnt start looking right until just recently though. My baby belly came late though.

I'd buy as you go if I were you.

  • I think it really depends on the individual. For me, I outgrew my pre-preg jeans by 9 weeks (embarassing). I bought maternity jeans at that point but they no longer fit me by the time I was 20-some weeks (embarassing again!).

I've just been trying to buy as I need things...that way I know they'll fit when I want to wear them.

Tops are easier for me. All of the ones I've bought so far still fit. I can even get away with some non-maternity tops if they are long enough. I think overall, tops are a safer bet than pants...at least that's been my experience.

Oh, Rach, don't feel bad.  Even though I've only gained 2 or 3 pounds, I couldn't button most of my pre-preg jeans at 12 weeks.  I got a couple of the Liz Lange Target jeans that I can wear now.  They get a little stretched out after I take them up and down a couple times and I definitely have room to grow.... but I see what you mean about bottoms being more difficult.

    Thanks guys!

You just made me feel so much better. I've been wearing maternity pants (fortunately given to me by a friend) for the last 2 weeks after my normal jeans won't zip AT ALL and my "fat jeans" I bought when I was pregnant last time won't zip more than 1/4 of the way up, making a belly band useless. I've been feeling really self-conscious about the way my body looks since it seems like all of my weight is redistributing itself so that my pants don't fit anymore, and I feel like it's "too early" to wear maternity pants based on what other people tell me about their pregnancies.

So, embarrassing or not, I cannot tell you how much I appreciate knowing that I'm not the only one who had to break out the maternity pants really early.

  • Like Rach said, it's different for everyone. I was in maternity pants almost right away, then again, it could have been b/c of the meds. I started in a size 10 of Liz Lange and needed to wear 12's right around the time I entered the 2nd Tri (hadn't even gained 5 lbs at that point but the weight had re-dispursed to my @ss) . I am just now feeling like those 12's are too tight but I'm going to just try to ride it out. As for tops, 99% have fit the whole way through. Since they all have a tie in the back, it's been easy to tighten/let out as needed.

Don't listen to people telling you what is/is not too early. It's all about YOUR comfort.

I was the same way- the belly just sat too low. I bought clothes about 18 weeks and kept most of them all the way through. I did have to repurchase jeans since I ripped them from yanking them up all the time and a few shirts for warmer weather but overall I was able to make it through.
