Murrr, MrsE, Chrishvny and ladies that delivered @ Vassar

At my appt on Friday my doctor gave me a brochure for the prenatal classes that Vassar offers. Did you take any of these classes (specifically the childbirth prep and pediatric cpr). Also, I see that there's a free tour and I was curious if you took any of the classes did they also do a tour or would I have to sign up for that separately. I know I can call and ask some questions too but I'd like some personal experiences. TIA! :)

  • We took the childbirth prep class and we both got SO much out of it.  More than anything though, it calmed both of our nerves.  They did offer a free tour while we were there.

They showed a labor/delivery room and a recovery room.  They pointed out where c/s were performed.  They showed the private cafeteria and explained how the baby/mom bracelet and security tags work.  It was very informative.  I recommend this class : )

100% this. we chose the 5 week (week night) class as opposed to the saturday class. Although I think they cover the same material, just more condensed on the weekends.

I think it helped us both so much because it covered so many aspects that you could encounter... and the teacher was great she answered questions that we had no matter how "crazy" they may have been.

I also took a breast feeding course there (I actually met Murrr there for the first time!) i thought it was interesting and well informed.

  • Hello  we did the childbirth class on a sat and with that they gave us the tour of the hospital. It basically gave us alot of info about what to expect and things that would happen so when we did go in for delivery we werent surprised by anything....we didnt do the cpr but i still want to take it. call me with any questions!!

  • With H's work schedule we never ended up being able to do the classes but did do the tour. It was nice knowing where we were going before we got there. As far as the classes I don't feel like I missed anything. The nurses were great and talked me through everything and explained everything that was going on beforehand. If i was nervous about anything they did their best to fix the situation and calm my nerves.

My only suggestion is to call soon bc when I did call about possiblly doing the classes they were all booked and could only give me the Sat before my due date anyway.

  • Thanks ladies for your help! Sara I called as soon I read your response and signed up! Oh and I clearly need to read things thoroughly because it said in the brochure right under the price for the class that a tour was included lol!

  • Yeah I agree w/everyone by taking them. I was more into taking them than my dh of course since I would be doing all the hard work. But he walked away from the childbirth class really impressed and informed. We learned alot of info from how the birth actually happens (well duh, but y'know...like how your body responds and the different things that can happen), the different types of pain meds, c-section info, etc. also the tour. I did the one day Saturday class. I also took the breastfeeding class and the other class (forget the name, but the one that teaches you what to do once you bring the baby home) which was helpful since I really had no clue.  Both of my experiences delivering at Vassar were great.

  • We skipped the childbirth prep class because we did it at my OB's office when I was pregnant with my first daughter. We did the breastfeeding class which was really, really helpful and the tour. I would suggest taking the childbirth prep class and maybe the breastfeeding class as well if you are planning to BF. It's a 2 hour class and they give you a great book and a bunch of handouts.

  • Thanks so much ladies! I signed us up for the childbirth prep class and pediatric cpr. I'm still on the fence if I'm going to bf but since the class is only 2hours & $5, I may take it anyway.
