Ugh I'm so sad! After more than six months of using condoms when I decided to stop taking the pill, I finally decided on a paragard IUD. I chose the paragard because it was obviously very cost-effective, convenient, and best of all is hormone-free.
Unfortunately, at my follow-up appointment the Dr. found that my IUD was being expelled. She took it out and then said that after I got an ultrasound to check for anything that might be causing the IUD to come out, she would insert another IUD at no charge. Except for the minor annoyance at the inconvenience, I was perfectly ok with this.
Fast forward 4 weeks. Ultrasound looked good, perfectly normal uterus and ovaries. I tried to move the IUD appointment up to this week (instead of next) since my cycle started earlier than anticipated, and the lady said they are no longer using the paragard because the price went up and insurance will not reimburse them the full amount. Motherfvcker.
So I guess now I'm thinking about going back on the pill, or trying the Mirena. The hormones are really what I'm opposed to, but I really don't want to get knocked up so obviously our choices are limited. We're definitely not a fan of condoms either, but those aren't really reliable even when used correctly. Ugh.

I'm also very frustrated that we spent $200+ on the thing because we felt that was the best option, and now that money may have been for nothing if I go back to the pill or they won't front the money for a Mirena. I want to bang my head on the wall.

And I know the frustration with the money all to well. The only forms of birth control that our insurance will cover are the ones that I've already had allergic reactions to.
Just to let you know, the hormones that Mirena does have is such a small amount, and localized, that you likely won't notice it at all. When I hit 30 I had been on some form of oral bc for like 13 years and my body just couldn't handle it well anymore. The hormone that's used, Levonorgestrel wasn't like any other kind of bc for me, as far as the effects. Using the Mirena was like having my old body back, including my sex drive.
Sorry to hear about your previous IUD expelling, that sounds awful.

Thanks for your response. Yesterday I looked at the Mirena website and other things that came up on Google, so I got lots of information. I guess I will try it- and if I don't like it they can always remove it.
I think the thing freaking me out now is the fact that acne was listed as a possible side effect. Sadly, I'm in my mid-twenties and acne is still a problem for me. I just hope it doesn't get worse!
Hey! I'm so sorry about your experience. That is so disappointing. Since I was 16 to the present day I have tried most forms of BC (BCPs (several kinds), Depo, the patch, nuva ring and Mirena). I got the Mirena in at my 5 wk postpartum apt and had it in for two years. I had a few periods with mild cramping, an increase in discharge (not glamorous but no big deal) and acne. It's hard to say how much the Mirena contributed to the acne since I am acne prone already but I will say I had a harder time with my skin in the last two years than was previously normal for me. All BC has it's side effects unfortunately.
