so emotional over an article i read this morning

I read an article this morning about a family's decision to have cochlear implants for their daughter. I think it was in Parenting. Or Parents - I get these two mags mixed up. all I know is I don't particularly like one and I have no idea which it is.

Anyway, it just stuck with me that there are parents who choose to not permit their children to have implants until the children are old enough (practically adults) to decide for themselves. They view it as mutilation, or fixing something that isn't broken. Insurance generally covers at least 1, if not both implants. One is enough to get hearing, 2 makes noisy environments easier on the patient. It is not like it's a cosmetic surgery.

I felt so emotional. It talked about how it scared the 1yr old the first time they turned the implant on. I could not imagine what they was like for her. In addition, all I could think was that if there anything I could do to help my child succeed, to hear, to communicate, to anything - I would do it. I could not imagine denying her hearing if I could make it happen to her.

I know the flip side - they can communicate with their hands....but most of us cannot understand it.

I'm babbling now. I was just really touched by this topic.

  • I rememebr reading stories and hearing news items on the impants when they were first widely available and the debates over the issue.  It touched me then and it still does today.  I can't imagine not giving my child the chance for hearing, if available.  On the flip side, I do not know anyone personally who is deaf and I'm sure there is validilty to both sides.

  • I read it too.  It was Parents.

There is a whole cultural within the deaf community about the implants.  My cousin got her's as a baby whereas her boyfriend got his in high school, you can tell the difference 100%.  She has a neighbor who refused to let her daughter get one and only sign/read lips because they are against altering what god gave them.

At the time my cousin was one of the youngest people in the US to get an implant in the late 80s and was on many TV shows, specials and travels the US for conventions now on the implant.   She lost her hearing at 10 months due to meningitis.  back then insurance didn't pay either and it was extremely controversial as it does remain today.

My Aunt/Uncle refused to let cousin learn sign, and "gorw up deaf" she grew up hearing.  She did however always lean to the deaf/cochlear community and went to RIT that has a HUGE school for the deaf/hearing impaired.  She also just landed her first teaching job in NYC at a school for hearing impaired.

So while I see why people can't imagine not giving your kid the gift of hearing, it is a different "culture" almost that we aren't in and don't understand.

exactly. i don't understand it because we haven't lived it. i was surprised how emotionally charged i felt by it. i was reading it aloud to dh while he drove, and my voice got all weird and i teared up.

  • Totally understand.

Thanks to my cousin I have a better insight and have used her for many projects in college for special education and my aunt/uncle are very involved with her.

She just got her 2nd implants a few years back, they do need to be replaced but as the newer ones come out they last a little longer.
