Someone please explain

Military One Source counseling sessions.

This deployment has been 100x harder than the first. There is a lot more going on and as much as H tries to be there for me he's still half way around the world and I have never felt more alone. I've been trying (and for the most part succeeding) at dealing with everything that is going on, but I think I need to talk to someone to help me better cope with manage the stress.

So if you have used them, how was your experience?

Re: Someone please explain

  • I tried setting up online counseling. I never got an email or phone call back. I went to mental health clinic on base instead. My husband and I receive counseling through a program that does not show up on medical records. I can't remember the name, sorry. ETA: there's no limit on session through my program either. At least none were mentioned.

MFLC = Military & Family Life Coordinator

LOVE LOVE LOVE them.  Joe and I have gone individually to see them a number of times and both had positive outcomes.  They can meet you at a coffee shop, Denny's, basically any place you feel comfortable other than your home, should you feel weird about going to sit in their office.

ETA: MFLCs operate through the Airman & Family Readiness Center and their primary work number is a cell phone.  You can call the A&FRC for the number.

perhaps that's it. I swear it was like FAST or something. We meet with a social worker at mental health clinic. The only paperwork I have says "family advocacy program". I call mental health to set up an appointment since their usual coordinator is on maternity leave. I'm really happy with this service.

  • Thoughts and prayers your way! I have to say that I am starting to be ?that girl.?  I broken down on Friday because everyone at the PX was showing me where the ?pens? were a not the ?pins.?  I ended up in a park crying for about an hour.  Now looking back it is some what funny since I called that my Disney Moment.  Anyone who has ever been to Disney knows that around 3:00 p.m. that every kid in Disney starts to cry and pitch a fit thus leading to the "Disney Meltdown."  That is now my code word for my meltdowns.

I have not done either however I am going to be speaking with the chaplain.  He married the H and me and knows us the best.  He is wonderful.

  • I've used Military One Source before for relationship/marriage type counseling, and they were great to work with.  I would recommend actually picking up the phone and calling them though.   However, for this, they actually set me up with private counselors in town, which means they don't necessarily know a lot about the military or pressures that military families are under (but hey, they are trained, certified counselors, which is awesome, and they are free).

I haven't worked with a MFLC, but I know people who have, and have heard really good things.  These people are trained to deal specifically with military and deployment issues, and you can meet with them face-to-face.  Be aware that due to privacy and confidentiality reasons, they rotate out every 8 weeks (I think?) or so.  So depending on how long the deployment is,and how long you go and see them, you may end up developing a good rapport with someone just in time for them to leave....

  • What branch is he in? If it is Navy or Marine Corps, go to the family support center. They have clinical counselors there that are available to you.  I am sure the Army and AF has something similar. Military one source is not your only resource.

AF. I'm aware it's not, but I know many women recommend it so I wanted to hear their thoughts on it. Thanks though, I'll look into the A&FRC.

He's AF, that's why I referred her to the Airman & Family Readiness Center. Wink

I didn't read any replies before responding.

And to the OP - I hope you find some assistance, regardless of how you get it! Deployments are hard.

  • Ditto to Ojo!! I absolutely loved the counselor at the Airmen and Family Readiness center. She was really great and understanding and gave me some great coping tools.

And ((Hugs!)) I hope that with the counseling, things get better for you. :( You kind of deserve a break.

  • DH and I used Military One Source for counseling about six months ago, and it did wonders for our marriage. I have major trust issues, and DH is the most trusting, easy-going person, which made for some major issues understanding each other's points of view on trust, and communicating with one another. I made one phone call to MOS, and got a few suggestions for counselors in our area (they even took into consideration whether we wanted a male or female counselor). I called the nearest one to us, and we were in his office in less than a week. We got eleven free sessions that didn't go through Tricare, and could have continued on if we'd wanted to (we didn't feel it was necessary to continue but would go back in a heartbeat, the second things started to feel uneasy). Some of the sessions were joint, and some were just the counselor and I, when DH was away. It was WONDERFUL, so helpful. DH still references things that we talked about/learned in our sessions. If you think you need to talk to someone, PLEASE use this awesome resource. I can't say enough great things about what it's done for us.
