why are schools starting earlier in the summer now?
I've been reading on FB for the last few weeks about kids going back to school - NOW. Some of them are local (DC, NoVA schools) others are in different parts of the country - South Carolina, Georgia, etc. what's up w/ this trend?
I looked a little online but I didn't see much that discussed this as a nationwide trend.
Re: why are schools starting earlier in the summer now?
I didn't know it was a new trend. I've known that schools have started early for years. Some schools (it may be nc?!?!) that go yr round, just in intervals.
MD has been back before labor day for probably 6 or so yrs?

Oh yeah I forgot how many yrs I've been out of HS, LOL. It's definitely been more than 6
My non-teacher, non-parent, smarta$$ answer would be so the kids are actually in school for x-amount of days (180? I can't remember what the requirement is). With the unusual amount snow storms occurring in the south, I can only imagine the snow days have increased drastically.
That being said, it still wouldn't matter here in MD for schools to start early. School days get cancelled or let out early for heat, rain, snow...
My first year teaching (1992), teachers reported back August 26th. This year it's tomorrow, a full ten days earlier.
Edited to correct poor grammar
I agree, but it seems kind of irrelevant whether they make up the days in June or start earlier in August.
There's got to be some kind of systemic justification for administrators and/or governments to move school start dates earlier.
The schools in FL where my friend lives start early...like 1st week of August early. But they also get out like in May. Down there it's because of the heat...so maybe other states south of MD do the same!? I don't know...
I feel like growing up (mid 80's to early 90's) we started after Labor Day and still got out somewhat early in June. High school was different because I went to private school and didn't follow the county/city guidelines of when to start.
I also think that there's been an added amount of holidays to the public school calendar. I don't remember getting off for the Jewish holidays when I was in public school and of course adding days off means that the days are going to have to be made up at some point. So starting a little earlier and going a little later in to the year I guess has offset the days off.
This all coming purely from speculation!
