Hannah, and others who know about home brew

Hannah,

I think I remember you saying your H makes home brew...do you have any suggestions on brands of kits for it or anything?  We are thinking of getting that for my BIL for Christmas...his typical choice of beer is Lager and he also really likes Honey Mead. I'd just rather buy one I know is well reviewed...

  • Nice! Does he already have the gear and everything? (Boiling pot; fermentor, etc?).

If it's just the kits you're looking for, H uses Brewer's Best brand.  It's very popular.  You can find it at more stores that carry brewing supply and also online.  They're typically around $30 or so? Otherwise, a smaller company he orders a lot from is Northern Brewer.  It's nice b/c they have flat rate shipping and some of the kits/supplies can get really heavy!

Also, if he doesn't have it, H uses John Palmer's book How to Brew for tips and some recipes as well. I'd recommend that!

  • Is BIL married?  If so, I suggest getting SIL a gas mask to go along with it, because that shizz wreaks!  LMAO!

Haha, oh gosh yes.  I typically try to time doing errands while H brews.

He got off work early last Friday and decided to brew; and my parents and sis came in town and stayed at our apt.  I'm sure they didnt appreciate the fresh brew smell after a 3 hr car ride on a Friday night. lol

  • Seriously, the only time in my life that I've involuntarily gagged from a smell.

Also, OP, this might sounds strange, but does your BIL have like money he can blow on stuff, or are things pretty tight for him, financially?  Because brewing is not cheap, even when you have all the basic start-up stuff.  There's always "one more thing" you need.

They do pretty well financially...I may have to reconsider though if it really smells that horrible-they are expecting their first child any day, and I'm not sure I want to subject my niece to those smells...I do think though it is the type of hobby he could really get into; which would make gift buying a bit easier for us since his current hobbies are more high end technical things.

  • It really does smell foul.  And it's not even like you can open the windows to help with the smell, because then it just smells up the area outside the house as well.  I'm not exagerating.  lol

SIL would probably want to leave the house with the baby, while he is brewing.

  • I don't know, I've got used to it; plus we have a great exhaust fan over our stove top.

But I will say, I think to get a legit starter kit w/the gear is over $100 if you get "good" stuff, like a glass carboy/fermentor, etc.  H's boiling pot alone is 5gallon and cost $40

  • Maybe I'll just go with a honey mead kit, I was checking the websites you suggested and they seem more in the range we were thinking and he has the stuff for it...
