sonogram question (not mine!)

When someone's sonogram says "9 weeks 6 days" at the top, I assume that means that is really how far along they are, right? (not some other sort of estimate of some sort...??)

I need to know the answer before I'll tell why I'm asking because I want to give this girl the benefit of the doubt...Thanks!

Re: sonogram question (not mine!)

  • Yep, that's how far you're measuring.
  • So that's how far along you are? Sorry, I'm kind of a dope with this stuff!

  • okay, the reason I'm asking:

A coworker (and friend my age, which is the strange part) keeps telling us over and over again she is nine weeks along (seriously, I have heard her say nine weeks about twenty times). We rode in her car to lunch and she showed us a sonogram (only because another girl picked it up and asked about it) and I noticed was dated Aug. 3 and said 9 wks 6 days. That's why I'm asking about how they date those things--doesn't that mean she's really about 12 weeks?

She got married at the very end of May and is sticking to the story that she got pregnant on her honeymoon in the middle of June(actually telling our other coworkers--yeah, he got me pregnant on our honeymoon) and I think that's why she wants to tell everyone she's 9 weeks. Whatever, I was just confused!

  • No, it means she's 9 weeks 6 days, not 12. The first 2 weeks between last period and a positive test are factored into it.

  • If you are saying that on a sonogram she had two weeks ago she was measuring 9 weeks and some days then yes, she would now be about 12 weeks. However, being 12 weeks along means she most likely conceived 10 weeks ago(around the 8th or so of June I would think).

  • Hey-

My first ultrasound had two dates on it.  The top had my name and 7 weeks 4 days, which is how far along I thought I was, based on my last missed period.   The bottom had 7 weeks 2 days, which was a result of the tech's measurement of the baby.  So, I was actually 7 weeks 2 days (which still makes sense for us and possible conception dates-I likely just O'd later than I thought), but both dates are on the picture.

  • I'm guessing that she was 9w6d on Aug. 3 when the sonogram was done. That would make her 12 weeks towards the end of this week...
  • Thanks for the explanation! I don't care when she got pregnant, but she's making a big point of telling everyone when it happened. I think it might be odd when she's saying the doctor thinks this baby might come "a couple weeks early" :)

  • Yep... That's what the estimated fetal age is based on the averages they use to calculate growth.  Interested to hear the story about this, though...

Edit:  Should have read the other posts, first.  Oops!

  • she's already telling people the baby will be coming early?! but yes, she would be 12 weeks, but conceived closer to 10 weeks ago - which she may not understand in terms of calculations of weeks etc. it is all rather confusing when you first start this journey Smile

Definitely confusing! I don't understand why they say you're 12 weeks along if the baby was conceived 10 weeks ago...why aren't you just 10 weeks?!?

Maybe she just counted herself and doesn't want to include those other weeks. Who knows--I figured she would want to say she's further along than she is because she keeps saying "I can't believe I'm already showing!" and wearing maternity-esque clothes.

When I said we were friends, I guess I mean we "were" friends until she started dating our married coworker when she had a bf and then marrying said coworker! (and we're all teachers and all of the students of course catch on to everything!!)
