30th bday (DH's best friend)

We're going to DH's best friend's bday party Friday.  He's not at all excited about turning 30, and didn't want a party.  His girlfriend is throwing it for him.  DH is killing me trying to come up w/ something to get him.  He wanted me to make him a cake as a gag.  (He likes FSU, DH bought this FSU cake pan and wanted me to make orange and blue cake with it but decorate it w/ garnet/gold.....apparently the friend had texted a similar cake pic to DH awhile back, but w/ bama colors and they thought it was funny.)  ANYWAY.....I attempted it this weekend and failed at the coloring, plus the thing sticks.  SO that "gag gift"....is a $30 failure.  The friend is an FSU fan, likes different beers (I suggested a "beer around the world" set from World Market, didn't go over well).  He's sarcastic, witty, has a "vintage" style.  Just bought a new house and has been meticulously working on fixing it up.  Usually creative me is at a loss.  Any suggestions?  I'm thinking we'll end up resorting to a home depot gift card, but DH doesn't want to.  Of course, he has zero better ideas.

  • I'm really awful at this stuff too, especially when they're not super thrilled about it. I just wanted to make a suggestion for the "sticky" cake. If you spread crisco (I know, ick) over the bottom and cover it in flour (make sure there are no shiny spots after the flour), then it should work. I make those type cakes a lot and that's the only thing I've found that works.
Awesome pic of hubby and DS#1
