switching health ins mid-year

Does anyone know how this affects deductibles and FSA contributions?

With the new insurance, will we have to meet their deductible for this calendar year?

Does my current FSA amount still get processed by my current insurance company and the new one starts all over for the year?

I'm sure can come up with more questions, but this is what is on my mind currently.

TIA

Re: switching health ins mid-year

  • I'm pretty sure your FSA is fully funded for the year on Jan. 1, and you have access to the money through the end of the year through the same provider even if you are no longer paying your original employer through paycheck deductions.

I'm curious about the deductible as well, but I fear that you have a new deductible to meet under the new plan.  I just switched employers and I'm feeling cynical after getting an EOB applying $814 to DH's old deductible...

  • I agree with PP about the FSA.  I switched from my insurance to DH's after our son was born and even though I had only contributed to the FSA for three months, I used the entire amount of my annual contribution and didn't have to pay anything back.  I have no idea if that will affect me at tax time though.
