Crochet Question and PIP

Hello ladies,

I am a newer crocheter and although I can follow someone showing me what to do on a YouTube video, I'm not so confident in following directions just by reading them.

I want to make one of those Booby Beanies and found free directions online.  (I'm having my baby in 10 days, on the 25th, woo hoo!  I'd like to make one to take to the hospital)  I was just wondering (I know, this is kind of "Ballsy" of me) if someone would'nt mind making a YouTube type video to follow along?

Here's the free pattern:    http://oxfordfam.blogspot.com/2010/10/free-boob-beanie-crochet-pattern.html

I also wanted to make some of those stocking/elf caps for my LO, and was able to find tutorials on You Tube.  (Some examples of what they are on Etsy with cute babies wearing them:  http://www.etsy.com/search/handmade?search_submit=&q=newborn+stocking+caps&view_type=gallery&ship_to=US  )

Here are the few that I made:

If anyone can help out, I'd be SUPER grateful!

TIA!!!  Big Smile

  • Never mind....I decided to give it a shot and I *think* I did o.k......I just might need a slightly darker pink, this ones a little bit on the light side, but it's what I have on hand right now.

  • P.S.  If you can believe it, my husband looked at it and asked what it was.  I told him and he said "I don't get it".  LOL  I had to point out the different parts of the booby, lol.  I guess with being pregnant, it's been a little too long, lol.

  • In all seriousness, what am I missing here?  Why does one want to put a booby beanie on a child?

I'm glad you figured out the pattern.  It's worth putting in the little bit of time to figure out how to read them as it'll open up so many projects to you.  I recommend working with professionally written patterns to start, preferably ones with glossaries included for the shorthand.  I always recommend Lion Brand patterns--there are tons of free ones on their website, they're well-written, often have user reviews, and include a glossary/stitch explanations.

  • Rock-n-Roll - I think it's just the name of the pattern. I understand where the name came from, but I really don't see what is wrong with it. It's not like it's made to look like a "real" boob. I think it's cute!

I didn't say there's anything wrong with it, I was just trying to understand the appeal.  I actually think it is made to resemble a boob; otherwise, why those colors and the name?  You have to admit it's hard to see it as anything else once you know what it's called!

ETA: OK, I actually clicked on the link and read the text this time :)  So, yeah, clearly intended to look like a boob, haha!

ETA #2: I showed DH the pic of the hat and asked him what he thought it looked like--he answered "a boob" with no hesitation, hahaha!

  • In all seriousness, some of us just have a sense of humor.  Big Smile

I think it's funny.  I'm a shy person and have never breast fed in public, but if I have to (because I have that legal right and who is mean enough to starve their baby or ask them to?) I would wear a nursing cover.  If anyone were to catch a glimpse, they'd see a boob, but it wouldn't be mine.  Ha Ha!

Plus I figure for those people who do not like public breast feeding, it's kind of an "In your face/Deal with it" moment.

To each his own.  Like I said before, I just think it's funny Stick out tongue

As I mentioned in my follow up, I didn't realize it was breastfeeding-related until I read the link.  I was just trying to understand why someone would want a kid walking around with a boob on his/her head.  Now I get the intent.  Sorry to get you guys defensive about it; I really was just trying to educate myself and I'm sorry if it came across any differently.
