Any pregnancy books to recommend?

So... I guess this is actually happening!

I've heard bad things about 'What to expect when you're expecting' and was hoping for a less scary option. I'm a reader and I would like to have something to get started with, I don't have many friends with kids and they're all in the states so I'm kind of all alone in this here.

Anyone have a good suggestion for me?

  • I signed up to the Babycentre newsletter, every week they email you with an update of the development. I still now get monthly updates (on my child). And sign up to Bounty and Emma's Diary, lots of useful info. In fact I found Emma's Diary book to be the most helpful out of all the books. I bought my books in the US and I regretted it. I wished I had bought UK books because the medical systems are different.

  • What to expect when you're expecting twins, triplets and quads!

I wrote a book! Bucket list CHECK!
  • My friend gave me What to Expect... and The Girlfriends Guide to Pregnancy.  I have not looked at what to expect yet, but I have read the first few chapters of Girlfriends guide...it seems ok so far...not scary!

We will be due near each other, so we can commiserate together!

  • I have the Mayo Clinic Guide and I like it. My OB told me flat out at the first appointment not to get What to Expect.
  • I wouldn't get any, I read maybe half of the one I got. I find that they end up scaring you more than anything else! I did like getting the baby center updates though.

  • I just read the girlfriend's guide to pregnancy and didn't find it too scary. In fact, I laughed out loud for parts of it. Like she says not to cut your hair short while pregnant, since your face will probably swell and a short cut will make you look fat.

  • A big fat hell no to What to Expect.  I hate that book.

I bought DH The Expectant Father and I have been reading it mostly.  It is pretty good!  Other than that I like BabyCenter online.

Good luck!  I am so happy for you and it is such an exciting time.  Everyone says it but enjoy it because it goes by soooo quickly.

  • I have Great Expectations and I really liked both the format and the information it provided.  Looked at What to Expect and didn't like it at all.

    Congratulations. :)
