T & P please

Just spoke to my mom and she recieved a diagnosis that she has Primary Biliary Cirrhosis. It's an autoimmune disease. In most simple terms your body is developing bile to attacked your liver. This also affects your spleen. She is going back to talk to the dr in September after the blood work is done. It sounds like there is a medication that you can take to slow the progression of the damage.

She seems in good spirits. She told me when I asked if she was ok, "It figures my body would attack itself." We are just waiting for September to get here so we can find out what the doctor says.

TIA!

  • So sorry to hear this. She's absolutely in my prayers. Keep us updated!

The good news: I know some people with autoimmune diseases that are living relatively normal, happy lives. I pray she is one of them.

  • My mom was diagnosed with this about 4 months ago, hers is in the very early stages.  She sees Dr. Aurora in Norman, and loves him.  She has been on the medication for about 3 months and all but on of some type of 'level' is back to normal on the medication.  I was very upset when I heard her diagnosis, but her Dr. assured her that if she stays on top of her medication and lives a healthy lifestyle it will not decrease her life expectancy.

She also sees a DO out of Seminole (she lives in Shawnee) who recommended she go gluten free.  She now goes mostly gluten free and has lost a lot of weight and feels a lot better.  She's not really sure what she's feeling better from (meds vs gluten free) but figures going gluten free isn't hurting anything.

Praying for you and if you have any questions, I've done some research and my mom's done a ton, so I can try to help! (hugs)

  • I'm sending good thoughts her way. From PP, sounds like it can be managed ok!

Thank you so much for this! I will let her know about going gluten free. She had a lap band put in about 2 years and has lost a lot of weight so she is very concerned that the medication will put it all back on.
