Decorating question.

H's dad gave us a big box of old vinyl records that I just found in my storage room this weekend.  I have no idea when H snuck them down, but I'm pretty excited about them.

None of them are from well known bands (except George Harrison's 33-1/3...squee), but most of them have very cool artwork for covers, and so I am thinking of framing and displaying them in the basement.

So for my question - I was thinking of either doing 2 rows of 4 album covers, or doing 3 rows of 3.

What should I do?  Or, is there something better you can suggest?  This will just be going in the basement.  Right now we have a sectional couch, a small tv and stand, a few tables for poker and cards, and a foosball table.  We plan on adding a pool table and finishing/building the bar.  It's just a hang out area.

Re: Decorating question.

  • According to my graphic designer friend, things look more pleasing to the eye in 3's.  Can you maybe tape off the areas each way and see which way you like best before displaying?

  • I did something similar in our basement!  We have two rows of three albums.

Like Wop suggested, I'd try to draw or tape it out just to see what will look best with your space.

This.  And you might even consider putting a record in the "grid" instead of an album.  Also:

Awesome, thank you for the ideas!

  • I think I got the 2 rows of 4 idea from YHL

You're the first person I've ever seen "like" something YHL has done.  I personally don't have an opinion of them, but the D&R board hates them for some reason.

Would you frame them like that?  I kind of like that it spans the back of their couch.

Haha I know.  I have never ever followed them, but I really like the way the two rows of four look above their couch.  Mine won't be going above a couch.  They will probably be going on a wall that will run parrallel with the (hypothetical) pool table.

  • Ha!  I really like YHL - some things are not my style but I enjoy following the blog.  I have no design taste either.

I think as others suggest, it may depend on your space - how much wall you have to fill and what else is going on around it.

    Very cool find though!

  • Another suggestion for testing layout--cut out blank pieces of paper in the size and shape of the album covers and tape them to the walls in the configurations you're considering for the albums.  Paper templates would be easier to move around than retyping or redrawing on the actual wall.

I have a large-ish basement with large blank walls.  That's kinda why I wanted to do something large.

    Good call!
