need attractive storage for ds's legos - any ideas?

So the lego collection is really getting out of hand. We've been using those fabric bins that fit inside shelves, but they're just open boxes and small pieces seem to get lost. I looked at Target today, but the options seem to be either 1) kind of flimsy or 2) really ugly.

Any ideas for toy/lego storage that will get the small pieces out of the way? It's driving me CRAZY.

thanks.

  • Hat boxes are cute for things like that.  You can buy them at craft stores and paint/decorate them however you like.  I've wrapped them with pretty fabric before.

  • My son is now 10 yrs old and he has been a Lego fanatic since he was 4 yrs old.  I thought he would have out grown Legos by now...but he is still into them.  Anyway, we have done a lot of different sorting/storage options and when he was younger this solution worked best:

    1. Buy a used kid's desk on craigslist (spend only around $10-20) the regular kind that sometimes would come with a kid's bedroom set - it should have 3-4 drawers.

    2. Paint it different bright lego colors - each drawer can be a different primary color.

    3. Buy a few large base plates http://www.amazon.com/Creator-Large-Green-Baseplate-626/dp/B0015VTQGC/ref=pd_sim_t_2  and glue them on the desk surface.

    4. Fill all the drawers up with Legos.

    5. My son likes to keep all the mini-figures seperate - so has them inside an old-fashion round glass fish bowl that he kept on the desk.

    6. We also put a long deep shelf next to the desk - where he could display all his latest creations.

This was an inexpensive perfect solution for us - that worked for 3-4 years.

  • I don't know about cute but my friend put her sons legos in clear storage bin with a lid that snaps on each end to secure. (reminds me of where you would keep your wrapping paper - laying down not that stand up kind)  If he's looking for a certain piece he lifts it and can see through the bottom.  I thought it was a good idea and kept them all together.  They keep it under his bed.
