One of those days, need SUV rec

So, I'm having one of those days.  Got home last night and was excited to see a lot of progress in the kitchen, but realized the contractor did not install a water line for the fridge.  He tells us this morning he can Plan B it (yay) without ripping up the newly placed tiles but needs to break the ceiling (again) downstairs.  He then tells us his wife, unbeknownst to him, planned a vacation and he will miss Mon-Thurs next week. There is very little chance of him finishing on our agreed upon date. So not happy with him right now, if I weren't so busy with other people who need a beat down....

That wasn't the most annoying part of my morning- during my wet commute from Goshen to the Bronx, the radio, speedometer, gas gauge, windshield wipers- basically all the electric stuff stops working.  Thankfully everything worked out and my Dad was close enough to save the day. I was able to borrow a car to get to work I don't really think that constitutes a yay, but at least I didn't have to burn the day.

We were already planning on getting rid of one of our POS cars and getting a SUV (just not so soon). Anyone have a recommendation for an SUV?  DH wants me to decide b/w the Honda Pilot and Toyota Highlander. He's on my list already, so he better watch out with his unresearched suggestions.  I'm starting to check out the specs for those SUVs, but was wondering if you ladies had any experience with them or perhaps another make/model.

Grrr.. I will be burying my POS Civic and inheriting his POS Camry to commute with (except in rain/snow, then I get the SUV).  He gets the SUV since he's home with the baby.  Great, now I'm angry, overwhelmed and jealous.

Thanks for letting me whine and for the suggestions!

  • Ugggh.  I am seriously going to kill your contractor.  After what you told me this weekend and now this crap he's pulling...uh uh.  no way.  Hugs and hugs honey.  It will be ok.  I was serious about helping you do the nursery when you're ready.  If I have to put that sucker together while you're in the hospital you know I can get that room together in record time :)  I'll just have A fight with his parents and he can get things done within hours.  LOL

You know I'm a jeep girl and I love my Grand Cherokee.  Mine is an older model but I haven't had any problems in the 5 years we've had it.  The newer models have a bit more legroom in the back and some more bells & whistles than mine has, but I think they are great cars.  I've heard good things about both the pilot and highlander.  My neighbor just bought a pilot and she loves it.

I can't believe the civic is dead.  end of an era :(  we can bury it next to my old blue one.  Glad you are ok and your dad was able to come get you.

  • you don't need a SUV for a kid, or even 2.

we happen to have a nissan xterra (pre-kids). dh wanted it. turns out that i love it and he hates it - LOL! it is not a great vehicle for kids because of the space when the back doors open - the shape sort of cuts out a stange space....i would not recommend even looking at it because of this.

we use the truck mostly in the winter/bad weather. otherwise, we drive a very reliable nearly 10yr old toyota avalon to and from work with both kids in the back (25mi each way). plenty of space in the back and the trunk - no complaints.

you might want to consider a regular 4 door sedan to replace your car so that there is a reliable car at home with the baby, and use DH's older car for your commute until winter when you switch on snow/bad weather days. in the meantime, take the savings every month of not paying for the suv payments and put it in savings until dh's car dies and then you'll have more $ to put towards a new car and would have had time living with the sedan to see if it meets your needs or if you really want the suv or, gasp, - a minivan!

good luck - i loathe car shopping. so much so that i accepted my mom's 10yr old toyota hand me down in order to avoid it!

  • We have a 2010 Pilot.  I didn't buy it b/c we were having a baby...I just always loved the pilot (i had a 98 Accord) and didn't like the new body style but began to like it a bit more.  I actually bought it the week before we were married as DH to be's car was dying and he used mine to commute (I take Metro North to work) so I needed a car.

I love it.  I find there is a ton of room and I wouldn't want to drive another car.  It drives like a Honda, not a truck and I love that too!!!!

  • Thanks, Ladies- you and the girls at work who brought me a nutella pizza- have taken the murderous edge off. I'm grateful for all the recs!

@ Jennynel- I know, the Civic had so many memories. Perhaps I subconsciously broke it so you take pity on me and design my nursery. Seriously.

@ Melanie- don't give me a coronary with the minivan talk. I'm not ready to go there yet.

I do think we could use the third row for extra seating as we plan to have our nieces a lot. Plus, I may feel more comfortable with the obnoxious commute in bad weather. The reasoning for a new sedan is solid, though.  I like the saving plan- this way we can get a really nice one if we really wanted it. But, I think DH is set on the SUV route. If I don't intercept, I may come home to a new one this week- that man can be quite impulsive. Fortunately, he "obeys" the budget and the SUV wasn't on the table until at least summer 2012. Maybe I'll take his other Camry- the Super Duper POS one (yes, he has 2 POS cars; let's not got there) until the summer and just call out during bad weather :)

  • Yuck. I hate those kind of days. Glad the Nutella pizza (OMG WANT) helped soothe the savage beast within. LOL
  • I have a Ford escape, I'm on my second one as a matter of fact.  I LOVE it!!  I have no kids, but it does fit my sisters 3 kids (15, 11, & 9) nicely.  We have also fit two adults and a carseat in the back quit comfortably with my 6'4" husband driving and the seat pretty far back.  And its a good fit for our 80lb lab.
  • NUTELLA PIZZA?!

    details please...!

  • Hope everything gets better soon! And yummm Nutella pizza sounds delish! I don't have either of the suvs that your asking about I hear ya on the needing one. I may have not technically needed mine but that's what I wanted so I wasn't settling for a car. Last year I got an excellent deal on a Mazda CX9 Grand Touring. I would've loved a brand spankin new suv but I opted for a 2008 because it was fully loaded and has a 3rd row and I couldn't afford new with all of the options I wanted. So anyway, my point is if your willing to go the used route, you can probably find a great deal on a 2 or 3 year old suv :) Good luck in your car search!

  • Ugh, what a craptastic day. I would have flipped my *hit!

If you aren't completely set on an SUV, I have a loaded Nissan Altima and love it. I've never wanted fir extra space, even with hauling all the baby gear. It has a 5-star safety rating (was our #1 requirement since we got it when I was pg) is very affordable and gets great gas mileage. It's also been great in the snow. We're sticking with it even with #2 on the way. I cannot imagine the extra gas costs in a truck with your commute.

  • You couldn't pay me to take a Highlander or any Toyota for that matter after all the recalls they've done on their models in the past few years. DH and I just replaced our Escape with the Ford Edge. I couldn't be happier with our upgrade, even though I did love love love our Escape.

  • I have a 2010 Highlander SE and I love love love it. Mine had no recalls at all. Its been a great SUV. It drives smooth like a car, is roomy and still nice looking.

I test drove the pilot too and it was very boxy and truckish. I didnt like it at all.

  • i have a 2009 nissan rogue. i do not recommend it and im so happy my lease is over in april. however, dh and i are set on a kia sorrento. its affordable and great on gas. we already test drove it and love it. i can't wait to go back and get it!

i test drove the pilot as well and agree with kendra. i didn't like how boxy it felt.

Hello. I've waited here for you. Everlong<3<br>
  • We just test drove a bunch of SUV's because I wanted one but DH won out and got a prius.  Here is what I thought:

CRV-Loved this car very smooth and handles nicely.

Mazda 9-Nice car but kind of felt like a van

Rav4-Hated it, drove like a truck was very loud.

Escape-Liked the way it drove, didn't really like the way it looked

Hyundai Santa Fe-Loved the car but I thought they were overpriced-I think they have a really good warranty though

My mom has an explorer that she loves and I like it too, they just redesigned them too!

  • I love the Pilot.  It is one of my picks for when I get another car.  Yet my heart is really set on a Subaru

Currently I drive an Explorer or Dodge Ran 1500 Pick Up (usually in the pick up).  I prefer big cars though.  Gas milage sucks (truck averages 14-15mpg) GRRR

  • Hi. It's me again. Why are you not telling us more about this Nutella pizza?
  • We have a Honda CRV and I LOVE it. I also have a civic and was never an SUV fan because I felt like I was driving a big truck. Honestly, when I'm driving the CRV it feels the same as my civic. I really am so happy with it. My only complaint now is that since Ava was born and we have 2 carseats there is no room for anyone else. So, we may look into something with a 3rd row next time. FWIW, my MIL has a Ford Explorer and I really don't like it. For being such a big vehicle, there is no room. The front seats feel very cramped to me and it drives like a truck. Also, my mom has the Subaru Outback and I borrowed it for a few months over the winter and did not like that either. Good luck!

  • I know I'm late to post but apparently I shut off my java the other day and it took me awhile to figure out the issue! Iam team Pilot! I'm on my 2nd one (1st was a lease) we got a 2011 with everything but DVD and navigation. I love Hondas and it's my 3rd one in 12 years. I'm not a big fan of toyotas in general and all the recalls don't help change my mind. Fwiw, in my family we have a bunch of SUVs; Acura mdx (bit fancier than the pilot but needs middle gas not regular) Cadillac escalade v8 gas guzzler but lots of room, Honda crv same size as a sedan but higher off the ground. and BMW x5. Most are more $ than pilot. But combined we have test driven A LOTof SUVs and came up with those options. I have test driven the explorer and hated it very rigid and boxy without much room in the backseat- not sure of the new model. Jeep grand Cherokee was nice but I thought it was overpriced especially the lease deals. Regardless you will be paying more for gas I drive to lower manhattan everyday (31 miles) and I get about 300 miles to the tank. About $65 a fill up in jersey. Also the pilot has a standard option that if your on the highway or local driving it will shut it down to 4 cylinders when not needed ( a little green ECO light comes on) to save u gas.
