Birth Control

I am currently on the pill, but am looking into switching my bc because I am really just tired of taking a pill everyday. I am looking into the shot and the patch. Has anybody been on either of these? Likes? Dislikes? Anything at this point would be helpful!

Re: Birth Control

  • I never did the shot or patch, but I loved the NuvaRing.

  • I did the patch and hated it, it didn't ever stay stuck long enough, the last week it was basically falling off. My cousin (roommate at the time) also used it and didn't mind it but had a similar issue. It didn't completely fall off more than once but I was thinking if it's not totally stuck, is it doing its job?

I've HEARD that the shot tends to make people gain weight more than other methods, but have no direct experience with it.

There was some fuss awhile ago about the NuvaRing significantly increasing your chances of developing blood clots, exp. if you're a smoker. I used to use it and really liked it, I took it out when I had sex at first but it became awkward so I just left it in. SO said he really couldn't tell much at all.

They were supposed to be bringing back the Implanon thing in your arm in a more useful, simple way. Not sure if you're interested in that. Also, if you've had kids (and in some instances when you haven't) I've heard good things about Mirena, an IUD, from a couple of friends.

Hope this helps, sorry it's so long! I've been on BC since I was 13 because of ovarian cysts! Good luck!

  • I tried the patch and hated it. The thing never stayed in place and when it did I got a rash from it. I heard horrible things about the shot: weight gain, major PMS and infertility. I hated taking the pill so I started with the nuva ring and it has been the best BC ever.

  • I have never done anything but the pill. I know a few people who did the injections and it worked well for them.
  • I used the shot in the past and really loved it. The only reason I stopped was that I lost my insurance and you get it every 3 months. My ONLY dislike was having to go to the doctor every three months but it wasn't a big deal after I got used to it. I would recommend it.

  • I recently got Mirena, so far I like it. Also you don't need to have children to get an IUD. I haven't had kids and my Dr. had no hesitation about allowing me to have Mirena. I like that you put it in and it lasts 5 years without any worries.

On a side note, a friend of mine was on Nuva Ring and it hormonally messed her up. She was more emotional than normal, had a significant amount of weight gain, and decreased her sex drive. I know that not all people have these side effects from Nuva Ring and some women have these side effects from different BC methods, but that is just my experience with it.

  • I agree 100%- Nuvaring is where it is at!!! This is my first month on Nuvaring and it has been fabulous. Can't feel it when you do not want to, no fuss, easy to insert if you squeeze it in half and take out in three weeks. Easy as pie, coming from a long time pill user.

  • I feel your pain...I HATE having to take that pill every night!! I was on the Depo shot before and I LOATHED it! It made me an absolute nutcase, I couldn't control my emotions and I broke out really bad. My hubby (boyfriend at the time) could barely stand being around me since I was like a time bomb lol. I know it works for other people though so it might be worth a try for you. Good luck!
