Question about air tickets with green card

I have received my green card in April. It`s a complicated story, but I did not tell my parents about it. They still don`t know.

I few weeks ago I told my brother that I was thinking about coming to visit for a couple of weeks, so he is the only one that knows and he will be picking me up at the airport. It`s going to be a huuuuuge surprise for my mom and dad :) I can not wait!! :)

I already booked my ticket with my maiden name since that`s the name that appears on my passport.

BUT on my green card it`s my married name. I`m a bit worried about how am I going to get back to the US, since the names on the passport and GC don`t match.

Does anyone have experience with this? Please tell me I don`t need to re-book my ticket :)

Re: Question about air tickets with green card

  • Bring your marriage certificate.  I had my visa in one name and my passport in the other - you have to have the name on your passport match your ticket - and I brought my marriage certificate...voila, it was fine.  It's something that happens all the time.
I like pineapples...they make life just so much more interesting.

Yes, this is the way to go. But also look into how to get your passport changed to your married name after you get back.
  • I agree with PP, bring your marriage certificate and you won't have an issue. I've traveled with documents with different names on them before. As long as you have evidence you are who you say you are, then you're good.

  • Sorry but I don't get why they don't know you have a Green Card.  Surely they know you live in the US so what is the big deal?

Do they know you are married?

I am wondering this too. Are they anti-green card?
  • I was planning to bring the marriage certificate, but it`s good to hear that other people have done this before and it was fine.

I didn`t mean to make it sound like my parents are anti-green card :)

Of course they know that we are married and they know that we had the GC interview, I just decided not to tell them that we received it, so that I can surprise them when I suddenly show up at home :)

  • I agree, bring your marriage cert and you should be fine. I think its very cool that you decided to surprise them. I figured it was something like not having been able to travel before you had it in hand so now you can.

  • Name on my passport: maiden

    Name on my SS card:maiden

Name on my Green Card: married name

I never had a problem. Honestly, they have all that info in the system. You got your Green card through marriage so they know your married name. Seriously, nothing to worry about.

Oh and I never changed my passport to my married name because it's just a name I am using. You'll ALWAYS be Firstname MaidenName. Now that I am getting divorced, I'm glad I never changed it.
