Anybody here from Texas? Question about Rick Perry
Re: Anybody here from Texas? Question about Rick Perry
What do you think his chances are?
There has been a lot of jobs created with him in office, but if you look into it the jobs are mostly minimum wage type jobs.(Not a bad thing, just not exactly what is needed right now)
He does have a large following here in Texas. When he was up for re-election the "younger" voting crowd was in favor of Bill White, the former Houston Mayor. FH jokingly said to vote for him so that he will finally leave Texas.
I have mixed emotions, I like what he has done for education (higher) though I think there is still room for improvement (grade school). My area is a little more rural, so there is about 90% of the town/area in approval.
I think we may vote libertarian this year (of course depending on the issues)
I don't really remember him doing anything too crazy in the years before I moved abroad, but I didn't really hear much about him at all. There was still a lot of focus on Bush back then.
However, this might also make you raise an eyebrow. Granted, it's from the Huffington Post, but still....

Apparently, Texas's teen pregnancy rates have gone up since Perry introduced an abstinence-only sex education policy. "It turns out that Texas kids thought that 'if birth control doesn't work, why use it?'"
When confronted about the teen pregnancy numbers after the policy and "asked for a statistic to suggest it works, and Perry replied that 'I'm just going to tell you from my own personal life, abstinence works.'"
I'm from Texas and cannot stand the man. He's so concerned with the economy and job creation that he has trashed our education system and medical care. His economic "successes" all look squeaky clean until you look at what the average citizens of the state have experienced because of his so-called balanced budget. Texas' graduation rate, compared to the rest of the country, is 42nd out of 50. Just a few months ago, he slashed education spending by $10 billion, when the state already had a $27 billion budget shortfall, which resulted in 100,000 teachers losing their jobs. And with all of the people moving to Texas because of the wonderful jobs that have been created, Texas will be lagging even more in educational spending. They can't keep up with the growth.
College costs have increased substantially since he took office 10 years ago because of deregulation under his tenure, making it virtually impossible for an average middle class student to get further education without racking up massive debt, or the parents digging deep into retirement funds; and forget about kids from low-wage earning or impoverished families being able to attend without scholarships or grants.
The Gardasil thing--it's even more repulsive because he had direct ties to Merck's lobbyists. (One of them was formerly his chief of staff.)
He's a slime ball who only cares about appearances. He couldn't care less about the citizens of his state.
You hit the nail on the head. Well put!
