Re: Monthly Budget

  • Copays if you're on Standard. Extra cushion in grocery budget for infant Tylenol/gas drops/etc/possible formula. Date night fund that includes some money for a babysitter, even if all you do is go grocery shopping in peace.
    Twin boys due 7/25/12
  • I can't think of the word, but does your base have the thing where if you use more than X amount of energy you have to pay the difference?
  • Oh, and beef up life insurance policies on you. If anything happens to you, your husband will likely have to afford daycare, so it's important to have.

  • Do you have a pet? Netflix or Hulu? Does DH do any gaming (Xbox Live, WoW)?

I've always wondered about this. We are on a base that does this, but we ALWAYS leave our garage light on (it takes five minutes for it to fully turn on and you can't see a darn thing without it), and DH is constantly forgetting to turn lights/TVs off. Still, we have never been charged a dime extra. I wonder how much you'd have to use to be charged more!

    Good thinking.

Our base doesn't do that and now it's bugging me that I can't think of what it is called.

I hadn't thought of that yet, thanks.

    No, yes, no.

  • You might wish to break the savings and fun money categories down into more specific  sub-categories. Especially if you're saving for more than one goal or if there's any type of hobby or anything that you want to keep track of separately.

I have it broken up on my paper, I just didn't want to type it all out.

  • You're moving back on base? I didn't know that! You can have our place. :)
I've seen a lot of military surprise homecomings. It wouldn't work on me. I always have my back to the corner and my face to the door. Looking for terrorists, criminals, various other threats, and husbands.
  • Do you have any plans for retirement set up? A little set aside now can make a difference in the long run.

A college fund for baby? I know this isnt a must, but I know I have it included in my budget.

  • Our base calls it a UA or utility allowance. Of course I always wonder why they are giving us a urine analysis. It's not in place yet and they've been talking about doing it for 2+ years.

  • Ojo's date night suggestion is a great one. Along with that, I'd recommend one of your savings items be a holiday/bday fund for the LO, so that those events don't break the bank those months.
