Do any of you have a relative by marriage that is close to your age and ...

you consider her a "girlfriend"?  My uncle who is 18 years older than me married a girl who is only 5 years older than me!  Making them 13 years apart. (This is his second marriage), and my sisters and I couldn't have been happier. We really like this girl and consider her a "friend". We don't call her aunt, she is more like a sister in law.  Who else has someone in the family like this?

Re: Do any of you have a relative by marriage that is close to your age and ...

  • Yes, they're my SIL's (my DH's brothers wives).

No one with big age differences in our families.

  • I do. I have almost the same situation with my Uncle as you do. I've just always called her by her name. It seemed weird to call someone that isn't that much older than me Aunt ___.

  • We have an uncle that is dating but it's not an issue because we don't really use the term Aunt and Uncle anymore in our family. We are all adults, there is no need for titles.
  • my niece is 8 years younger me, but mature, so I see her as a friend. in a few years, I'll probably consider her a peer.

  • My youngest sister and our niece are the exact same age down to the day. It's so funny to hear our niece call her "Aunt". My uncle married someone 13-15 years younger than him, but there's still just enough distance between our ages that I don't just consider her a friend/peer.

  • That's neat!  I know what you mean, I actually like that girl (BIL"s wife) better than my SIL.  (she is adopted and isnt' as nice as the rest of the family.)
  • I think so too! One of my aunts, has an "aunt" that's the same age as her and told me I should call this girl "aunt". I told her they started dating when I WAS 16, and that it seemed weird to call her that. I think she grew up with that aunt so maybe it's different??
  • My uncle (dad's half bro) is only 1 1/2 yrs older than me. His wife, my aunt, is one month younger than me. Always thought it was weird to call them aunt & uncle...

  • my fathers wife is 5 years older than me. i call her laurie. i dont consider her a girlfriend. my father is 63, she's 41.

  • Yes, my uncle actually married someone alot younger than him - only 5 years older than me.  I also do not call her Aunt ____.  She is more of a friend to me than a relative.
  • I'm in your uncle's wife's position.
  • Yes.  All of DH's nieces (ranging from age 20 to 31) are more like friends to me.  I'm 39 and DH is 43 but he has 6 older siblings, the oldest by 10 years.  They call me "aunt" but I still feel more like they're friends.
