Cruised with a kid?

Hey ladies!

We are considering a cruise soon and are looking for input on the activities/camps for young kids on any cruise line.  Many people have told me that "so-and-so's kids were upset when they were picked up from kids camp" but I've not met anyone who could share personal experience. So, if you've cruised with your young child, please share your experience.

 TIA!

Re: Cruised with a kid?

  • I've never done it but I've heard Disney cruises are fantastic with kids in tow.

  • I don't have children yet but I did go on a Disney cruise as a kid and have very fond memories of it.

We did the one in the Bahamas and I went on treasure hunts with lots of the Characters, did all sorts of fun stuff on the boat as well. I dont ever remember "missing" my parents at all during the days when I was playing or doing the activities and I'm sure my parents enjoyed the spa services or excursions that they did during some of the days as well.

I think other cruise lines offer lots of kid friendly activities as well but I would say Disney would be at the top of my family cruise list.

  • We did a Disney cruise when my son just turned 1, so it may be different with a toddler, but we had lots of fun.  We never left him, so I can't say personally, but we did go by the kids activity centers and they looked awesome!  They have separate rooms by age groups, and with so much to, I can't imagine any kids getting bored or upset.  They also give you a pager if you drop them off so they can reach you if they need to.  We did the earlier dinner time, then went to the show after dinner and he always fell asleep at the show.  They also have various kids activities scheduled around the ship all day.  I think if you're going with young kids, Disney is the way to go!  I can't wait to go back when the kids are a little older so they really get to enjoy it.

  • We're taking a Disney cruise next Novemeber for M's 2nd birthday.  Can't wait!!  Disney is awesome because they offer childcare for kids of every age...most other lines start at age 3.

  • We went when DD was 19mo. Other than Disney, no other line has childcare under 3yo (not the camp stuff) and no other line allows kids in the pools until they are potty trained.

But other than dragging my kid away from the pool areas kicking and screaming, it was good. We had lots of fun riding glass elevators up and down a million times and just walking up and down stairs. Her 2yo cousin was with us, along with his parents and their grandma, so we had family child care. We ate in the traditional dining room most of the time and the kids did pretty good if we brought books and a few little toys.

Beaches were lots of fun, but it was annoying that even the private island didn't have changing tables or anything except a playground for the kids. Overall we had a great time, but honestly I wouldn't want to do it without family so we could have at least a tiny bit of adult time.
