My parents have this ancient atlas, don't even know where it came from but it's funny to look at the maps and see how the countries were divided all those years ago. I never bothered reading the text about the different countries until today though. We flipped to "Abysinnia" which is what Ethiopia was called back then and read the following about the people who lived there: "The natives are of mixed Arab and Negro descent and are rude and barbarous. They practice a very corrupt form of Christianity. Much of the land is populated by savages and it is the destiny of the Caucasian race to reform their heathen ways." Wow.

Damn, if that is not one of the most offensive things I have ever heard. I have no words. Well, I do its just all jumbled up. I keep on erasing the things that come to mind.
What a horrible, horrible thing. That so many white societies believed this and therefore felt that they had the right to go and brutilize so many different countries in Africa.
+1
What does it say about South Africa? I am curious.
I can see why he is not offended. The atlas is over 100 years old. A lot has changed in that time.
Love this idea.
Now jumping domestically.
Well that was a crazy couple of years.
That's not surprising. I read an excerpt from a South African history book in the 1950s and it was still pretty appalling.
I was at an antique shop recently and found a pamphlet from 1694 (it had been reprinted more recently) written for pregnant women. It was like the "what to expect when you're expecting" of the 17th century.
Most of it was about praying to God during the delivery.... I don't suppose that helps much with the pain.
Wow! I love atlas' and old maps.
You must post a DAW!!!
