Thank you notes after interviews?

I had an interview yesterday and I was informed that it is a 3 interview process. The first interview - which I had yesterday - was a 'getting to know you' to see if they wanted to continue on to the actual interview. Basically, a screening process. I was told that they would be calling me in for a 2nd interview, some time next week (corporate is on its way in and they can't do interviews when corporate is there because the director is swamped working with them.)

I normally send a thank you note after an interview .... but that'd be 3 ... and I don't know how to even word them so that they're different from one another. Should I wait til the 2nd interview is over? Or send one now, and then after the 2nd? (And then the 3rd if I get there?)

Thanks!

Re: Thank you notes after interviews?

  • IMO it doesn't hurt to send them after each. You word them differently based on what specifics you discussed with each person at each round.

  • I agree, I would send one now.  It will show your continued interest in the position and may make you stand out from those they saw for round 1 who did not send one.  Good luck!

  • I would send a handwritten thank you now to the person/people you interviewed with in the first round. When you go in for the second round, if you meet new people, also send them a handwritten note. But for the people you've already met, just send a thank you email that's short and sweet. That way, they're not getting multiple notes from you, but they are continuing to hear your interest in the position and see your professionalism.

  • I always send thank you notes after an interview too but I don't usually send one after a screening process. I suppose it depends on what took place during "interview #1." If you discussed the job details, their expectations, your qualifications and so on then I would send one but if it was a brief pre-screening of candidates I wouldn't. I would wait to send one after the actual interview.

  • I would only send thank yous via email.
