Pillars of the Earth?

Did anyone read this book?  I don't even know what it's about.

I was on the waitlist and just got it yesterday, but I also had 2 other books waiting for me, and I just don't see myself motivating that much to read 3 books before they're due (and they're all on the waitlist, so I can't renew them.)

Should I even attempt Pillars of the Earth?

Re: Pillars of the Earth?

  • great book! I picked it up many, many years ago and it is still one of my favorites. It centers around the building of a cathedral in the gothic-style and focuses on the architect/builder but has many intertwined stories. I am not doing it justice- it is a great read.

  • I also loved it. It is terrific! I still sometimes think about the characters.

  • It's a good book but it is long so I would go with the other two if you have a time limit.  I have it if you want to borrow it.  I think I got mine through paperbackswap.com - it is an older one and they usually have the extra copies of older ones on there immediately.
  • Great book, but it is very long. If you have 3 books available, maybe focus on the other two first.

  • It's a really good book, but I think it took me six weeks to read it.  (I was very motivated, but I'm not a super fast reader.)  I'd probably put it off if you have a lot of other books to read soon.

  • I'll ditto everyone else that it's a great book.  I read it in high school and loved it and then reread it as an adult.  There is also a mini-series based on the book that you can watch on Netflix streaming.
  • I read it a couple of months ago and really liked it.  I like historical fiction though.  And in many ways it fit in with a lot of other books I've read recently (e.g., Phillipa Gregory).  If you like those type of books, I think you would like it.

Of course, it depends on what your other books are and what the wait is for them.  I want to say it took me about a 3 week wait to get Pillars of the Earth in epub format from the the Fairfax County library.

  • there's also a great mini series adaptation on netflix!
  • I also loved it.  I had doubts b/c it doesn't sound interesting but it was great and so was the second book.
  • Hmm. I love historial fiction.

I read the prologue last night and it seems like this book will take me just under forever to read.  I think it might have to go back to the library to be read at a different time.

    Thanks for the input!
