Gutter guards - waste of money?
Hello all,
Our gutters are pretty high up and prone to getting clogged with leaves and other debris. In your opinion, is it worth it to get gutter guards, rather than cleaning them out? Do they actually work?
(We have to rent 25ft ladders. Neither DH, nor I are particularly fond of heights. Though, I suppose we could pay someone to clean them out.)
Bonus if you have any recs.
Thanks!
Megan
Re: Gutter guards - waste of money?
I think even with gutter guards you still need to clean them out, just less often...leaves will start to break down and thus will get into the gutter, along with bird poop.
There is a HUGE range of kinds of gutter guards and thus, the range of prices. The Gutter Guys were several thousand dollars, like 4000 to 6000 but like 10% off if sign the paper work right now (i.e. avoid them)
We had a guy come out and fix some gutter that were falling down. Our orginal price quotes were like 400 up to the 6000 the gutter guys said...he repaired and fixed them for 115.00. At the same time he quoted us 225.00 for his version of gutter guards which he left us a sample of. We'll be going with him. His name was Paul Schaeffer with East Coast Gutters...I have to look for the number.
Our house does not have gutters, but our neighborhood is heavily wooded, so many of our neighbors who do have gutters have either gutter guards or gutter helmet.
I do not know the specifics of which company is better, but I have heard pros and cons. I know that one of the companies/systems only works if your roof has a certain pitch (our roof has a very shallow pitch, so if we were to put on gutters we could not have them.) Also I know w/ at least one of the systems your gutters are completely replaced and basically you can't do much in terms of repair yourself if something breaks going forward because it's a proprietary system, etc.
I am sorry I can't be more specific- our next-door neighbors who had one of them installed and they like it, but I know it was expensive.
We had gutter guards installed about a year and a half ago. They were the kind that we purchased at Lowes and had someone install them. They weren't very expensive since they just snap into the gutter but they have been so helpful. Our gutters were constantly getting filled with leaves and now we haven't had to clean the gutters as often. We had someone install them as our house is 3 stories and there is no way either of us would put them in.
Bonus for us, it stopped the woodpecker from pecking on our gutters and waking us at 5 am because he could no longer sit in the gutter and get the awesome metal banging sound.
