*naylon* re: bottles & meals

Saw your question in the BWLO post below....

If it makes you feel any better, Mads is still getting 3 bottles a day (right when she wakes up, right after her morning nap, and after her afternoon nap/before dinner).  I'm ready to stop & I don't think she'd miss them too much, but the girl flat out refuses to drink milk out of anything other than a bottle.  We've tried sippys, straw cups, warming it up, even putting in some nestle quik (go figure, we won't let her have juice but we'll put that in her milk) - nothing has worked.  She'll take a sip, and then legit gags and won't drink any more.  Yet she sucks down bottles like a champ.  At her 15 month appt she was only 19lbs 14 oz & had ony gained 5 oz since her 12 month appt, so the dr suggested that we keep giving her bottles until her 18 month appt, just to get her the extra fat & calories from the milk.  So apparently, bottles aren't disappearing from our household anytime soon.....

As far as eating goes, it's somewhat of a struggle lately in our house (more so for me than for her).  She'll eat, but I swear it's only the same 4-5 meals.  I feel bad that she's eating the same stuff all the time & stress out over it, but the pedi said it was normal.  Still, I'd love to get her adding in some new things.

Sorry this turned out so long!

Re: *naylon* re: bottles & meals

  • Glad to hear I'm not alone.

Jane used to eat like a champ, it was always the same things and it wasn't veggies (sigh) but lasagne, cream cheese sandwich, bananas, etc.  Now she sticks her nose up at all those things.  It's one thing when she does it at home b/c I'll keep trying until she eats something (but is that right?  or should I be like 'well this is lunch, take it or leave it') but at school I pack her stuff and they'll be like "well, she refused this and this"  and it means she only had pineapple all day long - or whatever.  Feeding is my #1 question for her 15 mo appt in two weeks.

I have been trying to keep her to <20 oz milk/day (she would have as much milk as I let her but I feel like it fills her up and then she REALLY won't eat).  Some days though she just really wants/needs more and I do give it to her.  She WILL NOT take it out of a sippy.  No way.  No how.

She gets a bottle when she wakes and then one between her morning nap and afternoon nap (generally right before afternoon) and then before bed.

  • Oh - does Mads eat the Plum (or other brand) pouches at all?  When all else fails I offer her those.  Sure, it's a baby food/puree but at least it's veggies and she's getting something.  You know?
  • Alex wasn't ready to give up the bottle at one year like her pedi wanted. I took it away from her during outings because I was sick of people giving me "that look". Alex has always acted and looked older than her age, so at 11 months I was already getting comments from strangers about how she should be off a bottle by that point. I'd have to bite my tongue, politely inform them she wasn't even 1 yet, and move on. I still gave her bottles at home though. She still will only fall asleep when drinking milk, so she had that night bottle for a long time. I'd keep trying a sippy first, then when she refused, I'd give her the bottle. One night, she just took the sippy and that was it. She decided when she was ready. She was about a week shy of 18 months when that happened, because I was ready to lie to the pedi just to get him off my back about it. We have enough issues with her sleeping, I didn't feel bottle weaning was that important.

As for varried foods, I think it's just the age where most kiddos are starting to refuse things they like or get picky. Some days Alex will eat cereal or yogurt, then for the next week or so she'll refuse them. She still has a varried appetite, but her pedi even said her varried food preferances was abnormally high for her age. Don't stress, just keep offering a selection, and eventually they'll try it.

When Jack sticks his nose up at whatever vegetables I give him, I give him one of these pouches. I feel the same way - its a baby food puree, but at least he is getting his veggies! As he gets older, he turns down the "real" veggies less and less, so that is a positive.

Kids are funny. Alex actually refuses the pouches. I thought they'd be a great way to get a healthy snack in her while on the go, but she hates them. She loves chomping on a whole carrot though.

  • MrsL (Melissa) - I don't know if you told your pedi that you were pg at your last visit with Mads, but ours was adamant that we got Abby off the bottle before the twins arrived.  She warned us that Abby might get jealous and want the bottle.  We finally got her off it at 16 months.  The nighttime bottle was the last to go.  THe only cups that worked for us were the Playtex sippies with the two handles.  I hope Mads starts eating better for you!!
  • I can't tell you how glad I was to see this.  I have been stressing about Elle's milk intake (its a lot) and only out of bottles, she refuses juice and will only do small doses of water.  I am curious to hear what your pedi says Megan.  Most days elle won't eat much so I give her another bottle figuring at least she is getting calories.

  • I'm also glad to see this. We're obviously not yet past the 1-year mark with Nora, but she has never shown ANY signs of being ready to drink out of a sippy (I've tried breastmilk, water, etc.). It's been stressing me out a little bit since I know we'll be transitioning her to cow's milk within a few weeks, and that traditionally they say that if they're old enough to drink cow's milk, it shouldn't be out of a sippy.

I don't know what else to do to encourage her to take the sippy!

It's good to see that it's really not a big deal if she won't give it up right away.

  • Re: Sippys.

Jane has used one since she was like 7 mos old for water.   Mostly play at first but now she knows how to use it and routinely drinks very watered down juice out of it for snack and water out of it during the day.  When there is milk in it though, she refuses.

I went cold turkey at one year (you all may remember) and tried to do the formula/bottle to milk/sippy transition all at once and she just refused to drink anything.  For days.  I finally called my Pedi who is very old school and I was prepared to hear him say 'keep it up, she will drink the milk".  But he was actually just "just give her the bottle, she's not ready".

As for when we'll try again - - don't know.  THose few days were bruuuutal.
  • Megan - Alex also took to juice/water sippy around 10 months, but wouldn't touch the milk one. We even tried watering down the milk just to slowly get her used to it (we'd give her full milk in the bottle, but it was worth a shot). Nope. We tried flavoring it, not happening. She refused the milk, and only the milk. Eventually we tried a sippy that looked a lot like a bottle, and she did refuse it at first, but we'd just keep offering it first, or put it out so she'd have to grab that if she was really thirsty (keeping an eye on the temp of course).  She did eventually take to it. That one was only used for milk, and we still called it a Ba (her word for drink to this day). After a while she bit the tops off those ones, and that's when we tried a regular sippy, which finally took.

We tried taking the bottle away completely, but it went about as well as it did for you.
