I'm probably too impatient, but since learning of my job status last week I've already sent out a bunch of cover letters/resumes. I take the time to tailor each one to the position I'm applying for, so it's not like I can just shoot 50 out at once. However, I've probably sent out 25 so far! And gotten one response. Sort of (it was automated from HR to take an aptitude test before moving to the interview phase).
When I changed jobs over a year and a half ago, I sent out 10-15 resumes, and got 5 responses within a few days (one of those is the job I have now). It's easy to read about jobs on the news and hear about how tough/competitive it is, but I think now I'm witnessing it first hand. My secret hope is that everyone is on vacation, just to make me feel better lol.
I can't talk to anyone about this except for DH because they would ask all kinds of questions that I'm not at liberty to answer yet. So, thought I'd bore you all here with the details. Lucky you
.
Everyone always tells me we should stay in the DC area because there are so many jobs in my profession. Right now...not seeing it. Anyone live in an area with a booming job market? haha ![]()
Re: Guess it's a different job market now
Maybe I'm naive but I would think things are better now than 18 mos ago, no? I think the vacation thing might be partially true - the end of August is a ghost town up here. Heck, even Jane's DAYCARE is closed the next two weeks!!
I hope you find something soon.
Hopefully it rings true for you!
BTW: When I started where I am now I was in Sales and my region was "Mid-Atlantic". I was in your neck of the woods nearly every week speaking to digital marketers. I don't have any contacts I've kept up with but I was surprised by all the large companies in and around the area. So, I guess I agree with the people saying the area generally has good job opps
EDIT: One company we worked with a lot that I thought was very cool was Discovery Communications. I know they're near DC, not sure about near to you. You might check them out? Seemed like a very cool place to work - neat offices, nice people, etc.
The town has definitely cleared out for vacation. So I wouldn't read too much into the lack of response just yet. Plus, depending on the type of jobs you are applying for they may have to wait for a deadline to pass before they can contact any applicants.
When I changed jobs back in 2008, it was so frustrating. I don't know how many resumes I sent out that I didn't even get confirmation that they had received my materials.
Hang in there!
I hear you. With my contract situation up in the air I'm looking too. And there's nothing right now! (I'm in marketing too) I'm seeing a lot of director level stuff, but that doesn't help me, lol! Hoping that it's just the season and it picks up in the next few weeks.
I might have an opportunity here to move into a e-marketing role, keep your fingers crossed for me! I think it would be a good move to build my resume, but my background makes it iffy. Already being an employee and knowing the division should be huge for me though.

You should move down here!
This company is already located here but just bought a HUGE piece of land in the middle of downtown to build their corporate headquarters. THey have an awesome reputation in town already as a great place to work (they just won some award for the best culture or something), but now they'll be expanding to an awesome new facility (I saw the plans-it's very cool).
Plus, this is an awesome place for horses!
I totally understand. IT is much different now, but better than it was even a year ago.
When I've job searched in the past it's been easy- multiple job offers within weeks, but the last year has been brutal.
Sometimes I wish we had moved to Dallas or another city in Texas, b/c Atlanta has been hit so hard by the recessions its sad to see all the changes caused by the recession.
I thought the job market would be better too. It might be that for my particular level/profession, maybe it's not? I'm also starting to think maybe I've priced myself out of the market, per say. Not that I'm sharing salary requirements, but I moved up pretty quickly and my role tends to prefer a few more years of experience than I actually have. Good while I have the job, maybe not so good when trying to find a new job? I will check that company out - thank you!!
Thanks...I hope that's the case! Changing jobs is definitely frustrating...thanks for the encouragement!
Oh no! I'm sorry to hear that
. Maybe it's our profession? I see a fair amount of either director level or assistant-coordinator level. Neither fit me either! lol. I will definitely cross my fingers that the e-marketing role works out for you. It's a great area to get experience in right now. Let's hope things pick up soon....
Casperdy - Thanks, I will check them out! Although I'm kind of stuck unless I go and DH stays here...or we get some relocation assistance to help us get out of our house. Your area is awesome for horses!! I would love it
Sunshine, I'm with you. I've always wished I lived in Texas or California just because they have so many marketing jobs in IT. Although I also wonder if job competition is even worse out there? Maybe the number of jobs balances things out.
Exactly! Lots of coordinator and director, so frustrating. Keeping my fingers crossed for you too!
