Comcast: How do you decrease the cost after a year?

Our one year $99 triple play ran out in June and I just caught it.  I know we've had some discussion here before about how to go back to them and get a better deal.  Can anyone refresh my memory?  Something about a number to call or what to say to get the best deal?  TIA!!

  • Call comcast and connect to the downgrade service/ disconnect line. And either tell them you need to downgrade because x package is too much or that you want to cancel because x package is to much and they usually give you a deal. I'm always ready to actually cancel though if they won't.
  • Ditto lachute. Also, if the person won't work with you, say you need to think about your other options and that you'll call back. Then call again and see what the next person offers you. It's crazy but some customer service reps are more willing to put you into a new package than others. FYI, it's likely the package will be 6 months (the year long packages are usually only for new customers).

  • We've gone so far as to set up a cancellation date and hang up without a new service plan/price, knowing that someone would call us back and offer us a better deal before that date comes to pass. It's worked every time for us.

  • If you get FIOS in your area, I use that as a bargaining chip too.  I just did this a few weeks ago and got 20 bucks knocked off our bill and I got HBO for free for 6 months.  I go right to the cancellation department too.

  • Ditto pp. My last promotion ran out the same month dd was born so I just called and said something semi-honest and polite like, "I just had a baby and our finances are a bit tight so I really cant afford this higher bill but Id like to remain a comcast customer. Are there any current promotions that you could put me into that are closer to my old billing rate?" The lady immediately offered me a ONE YEAR plan that was better than my previous one! Stars in alignment or fellow mom taking pity on me, who knows, but it was the easiest comcast experience ever. At the time we didnt have fios in our 'hood so I really had no leverage so I was thankful that she didnt give me a hard time and make me get biatchy and entitled with her. One time I actually pointed out the ridiculous reality that I could cancel my account and call back and get a new account and get "new customer" discounts that were far better than my loyal customer rates. The lady claimed that it was true but not very fair of me to do that. I LOL'd on the phone. Sometimes even big business is good for a laugh.

  • We called and got a 6 month extension of the promotion from Comcast, but when it expired, they balked at our cancellation.  So, we cancelled and went to FIOS and got a cheaper rate.

Comcast may balk at your cancellation or mention of FIOS, since Verizon has been on strike (from Maine to Virginia) for the past 2 weeks and are not able to install/repair/sign up new customers.

  • Definitely call.  When I did it, I just said I was looking to save some money on my bill, and they took $30 off.

  • Thanks so much everyone!

I believe you can get the triple play and just never activate /connect your phone. we considered doing that a while ago but then we decided to move instead ;P
