Application questions about current job

I'm applying for a different position with my current employer & have a few questions.

1) I'm updating the application to reflect my current position (it's an online app). Of course start/end dates for this position is a required answer but the only option is a month/year. So, how do I reflect that I'm still in this position & will remain in it until I get a new position?  Do I use 'Aug, 2011'? Do I use December, 2011 (when I would expect to start the new position, should it be offered)?

2) When it asks if they can contact current employer, does it look bad if I put 'no'?  I don't want my current supervisor to know that I'm pursuing this position. I'm not going to leave her high-and-dry but in case the new job isn't offered to me & I have to stay put, I don't want there to be bad blood.

3) When it asks 'reason for leaving' current position, is it acceptable to list 'closer to home' as part of that reason or should I stick to 'looking for new challenges'?  I'm also open to suggestions on this part.

The real reason is I love my employer, my supervisor, my coworkers but I'm miserable in my current position & think this new one would be a much better fit for me. And I really do want a shorter commute. Classification/pay grade-wise, new vs. current positions are equal so I'm not sure if 'Professional advancement' would be appropriate?

    2. This gets asked at least weekly. If it's possible to put "not at this time", go for it. If it's a yes or no, err on the side of caution and say no. If it's possible to call the company and ask their policy, put your mind at ease and do so. They may say they only contact a current employer if they're ready to make an offer.

    3. "Closer to home" would give me the initial reaction that you aren't willing to necessarily take one for the team. And it's not your company's fault that they're far away. Think about why you're miserable in your current position (minus the commute) and find a professional way to express that. Are the job duties not what you were led to believe? Are you not utilizing your skills/experience/education? Is there no opportunity for advancement? Etc.
