WaPo article: Rockville family with 11 kids

Did anyone read this article? This is mind-boggling to me. Not just the number of kids, but the fact that they all live on a teacher's salary and the kids go to private school.  How?? These parents must have the patience of saints, because I would lose my mind with 11 kids!

Re: WaPo article: Rockville family with 11 kids

  • ugh.  I dont feel bad for not having kids.  They have plenty to make up for us
  • They must have bought their house a long time ago, so their mortgage is super cheap, and I assume the kids go to school where the husband teaches, so they must get some sort of discount on tuition. That is the only way I can imagine this working. Even so, financially things must be super tight for them all the time. How stressful. Though $300 in groceries a week is pretty impressive - that comes out to just over $1 per person each meal.

H teaches in MoCo public schools and I can't imagine having 1 kid on just his salary, let alone 11.  And I'd imagine MoCo public schools pay their teachers better than Catholic schools.

  • They seem like normal people, but this is odd to me:

?We don?t have a college plan for tomorrow,? says Jen, ?because we?re trying to pay for the groceries today.?

Why are they paying for private school now (in MoCo) rather than saving for college?

I agree with you, but I'm guessing deeply held religious beliefs are the reason.

  • Back in PA, teacher's kids at my dad's (he was principal) Catholic school went free.  It was probably the best perk considering they made way less than their public school counterparts.  Not sure if it works the same way down here but that is the only way I see all 11 of them going to private school.

They may get a break, but they specifically cite the cost of Catholic school as an expense. I'm sure it's just a matter of differing priorities, but with 11 kids spending money on private school instead of saving for the future just doesn't seem entirely responsible to me.

  • And I wish she were a nestie - that would be one hell of a siggie/ticker stream.

    My vagina hurts for her.

    ROTFL

although if she had them all vaginally (and I can't imagine that many c-sections!), she probably didn't feel a thing by kid # 4 or so

Presumably, if mom is devout enough to go to Mass at 6:30 every morning, Catholic education and instilling that faith from an early age is the priority in life and G-d will provide when dad's salary alone can't cut it.

  • ?I feel very strongly that the best gift you can give a child is a sibling,? she says.

I totally disagree with this. I'm an only child, and I don't feel like I've missed out on anything by not having brothers or sisters. I'm very close with my parents, and I have wonderful friends who are like family to me. I think the best gifts my parents have given me are love and support.

I also disagree with how she feels about time for yourself (saying it's overrated). Everyone needs a little to maintain their sanity.

That's just the tip of the iceberg regarding my issues with this article, but it was an interesting read.

  • The Catholic school near me growing up had some rule where if you were a member of the church and your kids went there- after the 5th, it was free for the rest.

At least all their names don't start with the same letter.....

  • The catholic school at our old church had a discount for multiple children too. I think after #5 or 6 the rest are free. but still, wow, that's a lot of kids in one house!

Ha!  I thought the same thing!

  • I come from a really large Catholic family and most of my cousins have really large families as well.  (We plan to stop at 3 or 4 and will be the second smallest family).  I can tell you, it's amazing how things sort themselves out.  God really does provide.   All of my cousins families are single income, none carry debt other than mortgages, and some even home school (which is not cheap when you are buying multiple curriculums).
