What can you tell me about the elementary schools in the Heights? I know some are great and some are not so good. Can you give me the low down? Thanks :)

Re: rayskit10

  • Here's what I can gather from being in heights kids. Harvest and Travis are the two everybody wants their kids to go to. Families zoned to love have been really active in improving it and I think more will be sending their kids there in the near future. Field has a great pre-k program, but then everybody leaves. There's also helms and its Spanish immersion program.

Yes, pretty much true although there are 2 dedicated groups of parents now working to improve both Love and Field. Love has the more active group and is pretty much billed the next sought after school in the Heights. Helms doesn't get the positive word of mouth that the other schools get but parents who have kids there are obsessed with it. I know a couple pretty high maintenance families with kids there and they love it and are huge advocates for the bilingual education their kids are getting.

Garden Oaks elementary, obviously in GO, not the Heights, is transitioning to full Montessori this year. Between GO and Wilson (in Montrose) lots of Heights kids are going public Montessori via HISD lottery system.

However, in the end, Travis and Harvard are 2 of the best elementary schools in HISD and highly sought after. There are some differences between how each school is run and I think one is magnet and one is Vanguard but I am not 100% sure how it all works. THey're both highly regarded schools but I think you would need to visit each of them to know the subtle differences in their programs. Being zoned is best but my neighbor goes to Harvard and we are not zoned there so the lottery does help other kids get in. Also, just b/c you are zoned to Travis doesn't mean your child gets a Vanguard education. They still have to test in for that.

If you want to email me, I can try and dig up some old emails from Heights Kids and forward them on to you viula at theheightslife dot com

  • Thanks ladies. We are planning to move back to Houston around this time next year, and schools will be important to us at that point (just renting though). Proximity to family is important...mine in Bellaire and DH's in Sharpstown. We'd ultimately love to rent in Bellaire, but exploring other in- or near-town options as well. Living closer to DH's fam is just a no-go for me (neighborhood and school wise).

I'll save this post...and may email you in the future, rayskit. Thanks again to both of you for the help!
