Q for ladies who've been pregnant

I've been losing weight and it's actually enough now that I've gone down a size in pants and shirts. (yay!) anyway, this has led to a major clean out of my closet, and I now have a huge pile of clothes that are too big and I can't wear anymore. I'm trying to decide if I should just get rid of it all. Is it worth saving to pull out in the future sometime when I get pregnant (or for post-pregnancy too I guess)? Or would it still not fit and I'd have to go with maternity stuff anyway? If they wouldn't work then I'd just rather throw them in the donate/garage sale box now and get them out of the house. Any thoughts would be appreciated :)

Re: Q for ladies who've been pregnant

  • If you have any flowy tops, I would hold onto those. I wouldn't hold onto the rest of the clothes. I went through a phase were regular clothes didn't fit right and maternity clothes looked like a tent.
  • I'd say get rid of them. When I was pregnant, my bigger clothes didn't fit right. My belly was the only body part that needed more room, and bigger pants were bigger everywhere. I'd just go with maternity stuff.

  • I would hold on to any flowy-type tops as well.  I ended up wearing most of my regular tops throughout my pregnancy.  As far as pants go, I would just do maternity pants since they were so much more comfy to me around my belly than regular pants.

  • Agree with flowy tops, chuck everything else. Pants are kind of an oddity during pg, and typically regular pants don't fit, unless you're one of those perfect pregnant people that only get a little bump out front and don't spread like butter.
  • I don't have any flow-y tops because they make me look pregnant! lol! Seriously though, I have an apple shape - no hips, lots of tummy - so I do tend to look pregnant, especially when I was at the higher weight. Which I guess is why I thought maybe stuff would work when I really was? But obviously I have no experience with the kind of changes that will happen.

I think maybe I'll got through my clothes and pick out the favorites vs the I don't care if I never wear this again. Then I'll give myself one small bin under the bed to save and say adios to the rest!

When I was on the way up, I packed up a bin of favorite too-small clothes that sat under my bed for probably years. I took it out this weekend and most of it fits now and it was seriously so exciting! It's like a whole new wardrobe for free. I know it's kind of silly to save stuff you may never use again, but this experience made me think maybe it's worth taking the chance.

  • I agree with the flowy tops but I also say keep a few pairs of jeans.  NONE of my pants fit tight now and I am gettting by with a few work pants with my Be bands from Target.  ALL of my regular jeans are too small and the maternity ones stretch out and slip down, so I am wishing I had not given away my size 14's a while back.

  • I'd keep a couple pairs of pants for PP while you're getting back in shape. I was able to put my "fat jeans" on a couple days after I had Violet. I was glad I kept them b/c I was sick of maternity pants, but couldn't fit into my normal clothes yet. However, now that I'm back on the losing train, I plan to get rid of my "fat clothes" as I grow out of them.

  • I would hold on to some of the pieces that you like.  After having DD, I couldn't get into my regular clothes but a lot of the maternity stuff didn't look right.  I had to buy some clothes that were about a size or two bigger than what I was pre-pregnancy.

As far as wearing too-big pants for maternity pants, I don't think that will work.  They may fit you front to back wise, but they will likely look baggy on your hips.

  • I would definitely keep some of them. Throw some out to make yourself feel better about getting rid of stuff, but if you're like me and hate buying transitional clothes, then save some for after the baby.

I found that, just like Pookie, some clothes that were 1-2 sizes too big were great for the days when I was back to normal clothes, but not yet back to my normal size. Those were awful days to have to go out and buy clothes. You just don't want to see yourself in a mirror anyway, much less in a fitting room mirror.

Ditto on them being useless once you start showing in pregnancy, but you may be able to make them work until about halfway through depending on how you gain.

I'm a packrat like that, though. Oh, and a cheapskate.

  • I'd keep the ones you really Ike and ditch the others. It all depends on how you gain. I was all belly so bigger pants wouldn't have worked for me while pregnant or after.
