Backyard fences - non clicky poll

Backstory - I grew up in California, where literally every house's backyard is fully fenced, without question. Now that we're in Washington, I'm finding that a fully fenced backyard is not only not the norm, but somewhat difficult to find. I would think its Washington thats weird, but my sister moved to Oregon last year and is finding the same full fence oddity, so now I'm wondering if its actually normal to not have a fenced backyard and its California thats weird and paranoid with their fencing craze.

So, where you live, are you more likely to find a fully fenced backyard or no?

We like our privacy up here in MA, so a fenced yard, or some other form of property line definition, is definitely more common than not.

Around here, I'd say there's a mix of both. There's lots of new construction in my area and most of those homes do not have a fence. Older homes sometimes do, but it's no guarantee. I think because of the high housing prices around here, lots of homeowners don't end up having the funds to add extras like fences and decks.

It's about 50/50 here. Most people who own dogs have a fenced backyard for obvious reasons, but there are just as many open yards as fenced ones in my neighborhood.

It's about 50/50 here too. Our backyard is fully fenced in with a 6ft wooden fence but our neighbor has his fenced in except for the opening by his driveway. I would say most people here do have their yards at least partially fenced in.

I can totally see not having the extra money for a fence. Its so weird up here though, it feels more like they just never thought a fence was needed.

We noticed too that even ground level apartments don't have any kind of fencing for their little porch area.

its so skewed here by the area. most of the houses in larger developments have fences because its a building code requirement for a home with a pool or a pet. that and like MB said, in developments people like to get whatever privacy they can.

where i grew up (15 mins away), there are hardly any fences and thats mostly because people have huge lots. i grew up on a 22 acre property, so we didnt have a fence. and a lot of the homes in that area are the same. the new developments have them. but in town there are zero fences. there isnt even a pool enclosure requirement in the borough or township.

Most around this area do not have fences. I've never lived in a house with a fence. I kind of like the open space so I would never put one in (unless I had a pool and HAD to)

I feel like it's 50/50. In my parents neighborhood most everyone has a fence. They live in a much more quiet residential part of the city than I do. My side of town fences are not as common.

I'd probably say at least 80% have fences here. Although we also have one of the highest dog/people ratios here in CO, so that would have something to do with it.

In my city I'd say about 25% of the backyards are fenced in. In larger cities in the area it's about 50/50.

Our yard has a privacy fence that we added a little over a year ago. Our main reasons being that we hated our neighbors and we're right next to DH's shop/employer so we wanted to hide the backyard from the customer drop-off area.

And you know what? 6 months after we put that fence up, our horrible neighbors moved.. *happy dance*

I'd say it's about 50/50 here, too. A lot of people have them for privacy, I'm sure, but it seems that most are for pets. It's not something you would expect, when you're looking for a house, just an extra "luxury." We don't have one. We've been thinking about putting one up, but I'd rather spend that money inside the house, like on hardwood floors.

Ditto. Unless a house is backed up to a wooded area, most have fences or shrubs to define the boundaries.

It's about 50/50 here. I'm rural, but near to more higher populated cities like Morgantown, WV and Greensburg, PA. The closer you get to the cities, the more fences you find. The more into the country you get the more silos you see.

I'm in Georgia. Most houses have fences, uncless they're on a large piece of land or in a neighborhood.
