Dr. Payment Related Question

After my surgery in March, the doctor/surgery center billed my insurance super fast. I get email alerts on everything so I could see when it was filed/approved/etc.

My insurance didn't cover everything - that was expected. We anticipated paying 10%, about $1k.

We never got billed.

My Mom (who's worked in hospitals forever) says it's probably not a mistake - they probably swallowed the rest of the cost as a courtesy because the doctor was a partial owner in the surgery center I went to.

Would you call and confirm?

On one hand, I don't really want to hear, oh yes! we'll send a bill now! On the other hand, I feel like I'm constantly wondering if/when this will show up.

Re: Dr. Payment Related Question

  • Hm... I do know from M's medical stuff because of his kidney stone that sometimes medical bills take a really long long time to come in. It was 2-3 months before we saw some bills although we had gotten the insurance notification within weeks of the procedure. At this point, that does seem unlikely since you'd think a surgery from March would have been to you by now.

It's also a possibility that it got lost in the mail and never arrived. That also happened with a medical bill. Eventually the place called us, and asked if we needed to be set up on a payment plan. We asked them to resend and paid it immediately (along with an apology note for not getting it in sooner though it wasn't our fault).

I would probably call if I were you to see if it had been lost or what the deal was. In the end, if it still needs to be paid, I'd want to do the right thing by settling that debt even though I wouldn't want the bill!  But if your account has been cleared it would be great to feel that relief.

  • did you get your EOB from the insurance company yet? (stating what they pay and what you owe?)

    I wouldn't call.....

BUT - I wouldn't count yourself out of the woods just yet - Like Brit said these things can take sometime. I work in insurance and just today was looking for a bill with a date of service in 04!

I had a double charge fo through on one of my credit cards in August ----- for an appointment in September......

Sometimes these things are just fluky.

  • Hmmm, I don't know. When I was a senior in college in 2005 I had an accident and needed stitches and some other things in my foot, my treatment lasted 2 weeks, and I went to the acute trauma center inside the infirmary on campus. I thought I would be billed for it considering they didn't accept my insurance and I knew it wasn't covered in my student fee. I never got a bill. At the beginning of this year, I suddenly got a bill for it. Five and a half years later the bill for $1100 showed up. I called and asked why I was getting the bill now, when it happened so long ago, and back then I possibly could have filed some sort of reimbursement claim with my insurance, which was my parents' policy, and hello, over five years later I no longer carry that insurance. They finally agreed that they had waited too long to bill it and it had fallen through the cracks and wrote it off. Long story short, you don't want the stress of a bill appearing years later and even if they are willing to write it off, the stress of having to fight them to do so.

  • I wouldn't call.  In my experience, if they want their money, they will let you know about it.  When I had my appendix taken out, the surgeon charged me like $10k and my insurance company only agreed $5k, but they struck a deal and I ended up paying nothing.

  • I didn't read the other responses, but did you get an EOB?

  • Yes, I did get an EOB. They always say, "The Doctor may charge you XXX"
  • I personally would call.  I'm not good about just waiting and wondering if/when something will come up, especially when it's dealing with a good chunk of money that you may not have a year or so whenever it does decide to come (if at all).

And, IMO, not calling just to avoid reminding them so hopefully you won't have to pay seems kinda sneaky.  I mean, if you're already expecting and prepared to pay it, the worst they can do is actually send you the bill.
