What else can I cut?

My DH has an upcoming deployment ( this is our 2nd) and I am making lists of things we can cut and save money on while he is gone..

Ive got a few things but if you can think of anymore, please let me know:

His cell phone

X-Box live

BC pills ( WOOHOO- even though they are free, itll save me from taking a pill every day!)

Thats all I've got.... Im stumped...

  • Does he have things like NFL Sunday Ticket?

  • Insurance.

Some CC's will reduce rates on a servicemember's card when they deploy.

  • Some credit card companies and banks will lower the interest rates on loans/credit cards while the member is deployed.

    Twin boys due 7/25/12
  • You wont be paying for gas for his car!
  • If you have USAA for insurance you can take his car off the road for deployment and save money.  You aren't supposed to let it leave the driveway, but I will take his like once every weeks up to Target at the corner.

I would be careful with the pill.  A lot of people have horrible mood swings and problems going off of it, so I don't know if it's something I would want to do, but it's your call.  I plan on going off mine when he leaves for the next deployment because we are planning on TTC after, and I want my body to adjust.

  • I plan on saving on beer.  The H drinks beer that cost way more money than the kind I drink HAA!

Direct TV is one of ours.  Well the "everything sports related."

  • We dont have NFL ticket ( I WISH we did) lol  And last deployment we still insured his car because I drove it as well.. But maybe well think about that..

As always, thank you for your ideas and input!

  • Is your water heater electric? I've noticed that the hot water portion of our electricity bill changes considerably according to whether or not DH is home.

  • I dont know if it is?? Im thinking it isnt.

We are lucky that we dont have to pay for water, though.. and our electric is usually low because we never use heat or air conditioner

  • DH is preparing to deploy as well, so this is something I've been thinking about. Here's what we'll be saving on:

    Phone bill

Car insurance (we have USAA and we'll be parking his car and disconnecting the battery while he's away)

His WoW subscription (yes, he's a giant nerd)

    Grocery and gas money

If you live off base, you'll probably save a little on your utility bills. I've noticed that with DH off training so often, I hardly ever run the dishwasher because I rarely cook full meals for just myself! Keep in mind, though, that it might be a good time to up the amount you plan for random expenses. When DH deploys we do a separate checking account for his spending money, so he can buy what he wants/needs without having to constantly check our bank accounts or check in with me. We end up spending a little more on random expenses that way, but it saves us in the long run; first deployment DH kept over-charging our account so we were always getting into trouble with that!

  • TSP contributions are tax free if made during a tax free deployment.  Or, that's what I've heard.  I didn't even know about TSP during his last deployment.  Anyway, that's a huge future savings.
