Those with an etsy shop.

I have a question. Would you mind if I PM'd you? I don't want to break any TOS. I'm having issues with figuring out what type of bank account to open. I'm tired of getting the run around from different people and so I figured the people who have shops could help more than the person in India with my bank who doesn't understand me and who I don't understand. I feel like I'm in that auto insurance commercial where they just keep transferring the woman to different people and back to the same one, haha.

and if I am breaking any TOS here just let me know and I'll remove this. Smile

  • as long as you don't promote your shop on here you are ok and not breaking and TOS stuff so feel free to ask in the open :)

Alrighty, well, what sort of account did you all open (if you opened a new one)? I've had one person at the bank tell me I needed a business account and another said a personal account would be fine. I've also heard both from others, but none of them had etsy shops.

  • I have a separate personal account with my credit union, but a Paypal business account.

As far as Paypal goes, you have to yhave a premeire or business account there.

It really hasn't mattered much at this point, but I haven't looked into the advantages either way.

Crap I hadn't even thought about the Paypal part. I was just focusing on the bank account. I was planning on opening  a personal, but when people started talking about having to have a business account it made me uneasy on my decision.

  • A personal account is fine. A business one is something they push because they usually have fees, minimum balances, etc. to make more off of you.
  • I, too, have opened a business account with paypal...it's super easy to do. DH, however, doesn't want me to sell anything until we incorporate...just in case someone decides to sue me for some reason or other (not anticipating a reason, but just to be careful). Looked online about doing that and it was going to cost about $300...we'll be waiting to officially open the etsy shop for a bit.

  • I opened a business checking through Chase bank and got a business credit card through them also.  As long as you used their debit card once every so often, there are no fees, no minimums, nothing.  I did it just so that I kept everything on mine separate, and also so I can accept payments (from local shows, etc) as my shop name OR my real name.

Through PayPal, I set up the business or premiere (it's too early to remember which one) account to see through.  I have another account through PayPal for all of my non-Etsy items, so that I keep my personal and my shop completely separate so when tax time comes, it isn't as much thinking!
