BR: I think he's weaning :(

I knew it was going to happen sooner or later with the pregnancy progressing and all, but I'm not ready. :(

For the past few days he'll eat a decent amount in the morning and before bed but pretty much refuses all day long. When I can get him to nurse a little, he'll do it for a couple of mintues then pull off and blow raspberries like he does when he doesn't like something. I'm assuming the taste must be changing.

I really (selfishly) want to make it until his birthday at least.

Should I start giving him some whole milk during the day to get those extra calories in? I plan to keep nursing and offering as much as possible, but I also don't want him not drinking...

Re: BR: I think he's weaning :(

  • I would probably try the whole milk, but if he's refusing, I'd say he's obviously not starving. It's also possible that your supply is dwindling so he doesn't think it's "worth it" to nurse?

I'm getting down to the last few weeks here, too, and my supply seems to naturally be winding down, even though I'm not pregnant. If I end up having to supplement with something, I'm just going to do the whole milk--in my mind, no sense in transitioning to any sort of formula just to have to switch again in a few weeks!

I'm sorry this is happening before you're ready. I'm sure it's hard when you can't quit on your own terms!

  • Oh I'm sure it's partially supply too... I can go almost all day without nursing him (like today he nursed at 9am and not again until 5pm) and am not the least bit uncomfortable.

I agree with you- I don't see what difference 2 weeks is going to make so I'm not going to bother with anything other than whole milk.

I think it just makes me sad because originally I planned to make it to 18 months and now I'm not even sure we'll make it to 12. I feel like I'm cheating him when he's not ready either. :(

  • June did this a few weeks ago. But I kept on and she's still nursing but it isn't the same. We've been offering bottles and she takes them. I still nurse in the morning and evening (haven't been at bedtimeSad ) But, I've been pumping and using that to keep my supply up. I really want to make it this last month. After that...whatev! But when I didn't have any pumped bottles I offered cow milk. She didn't drink much of it. But my pediatrician said she could have cow milk. The only reason she couldn't have it yet completely is due to the lack of iron. Hope that makes you feel better if you have to offer whole milk.

Heather, I am amazed that you still have a stash!! I had a nice one saved up but I think it got broken into during my two finals week pretty bad and some "miss use" as I'd like to call it from my FIL and DH. All well. I'm proud of you though!! You go girl!!

  • He could be weaning but maybe not. It's completely normal for your supply to drop at that age and for the kiddos to go through periods of losing interest. If you want to continue nursing, I would continue offering him the breast at certain points of the day, but don't stress  if he doesn't take it. And, obviously, continue nursing him in the morning and evening.

  • That's reassuring, Ameron!

That's what I'm planning to do... hopefully it's just a phase and not pg-related changes. I was in tears tonight when I was putting him to bed feeling like I'm "failing" him since he acted like he wasn't interested. (FWIW he did end up nursing his normal amount of time before bed, so that's good!)

Oh, honey, you are not failing! His actions are all a normal part of the nursing relationship. :-) You're doing a freaking great job!

You're amazing, don't think you're failing, you are doing everything right and as well as you can given the influence of his own actions. Be proud you've done this much!!

  • Thanks, girls!! I think I'm just emotional tonight. ;)
  • I agree with Jenn. Tiff, continue doin' your thang and see what happens. :) He might bounce back. You know how it is... everything is a phase! How has he been doing with sleeping, BTW?

Ameron--I had a pretty major oversupply the first four months or so of her life. I was pumping an EXTRA 8-10+ oz. a day, so at one point, I had a freezer stash of like 500 oz. Then we had several months where I was pretty much breaking even every day, so although I rotated out the stash, it was never depleted. I've just started chipping away at it the last 2-3 months or so to help keep up, and now I am down to about 225 oz. The oversupply I had was definitely a blessing! I hope to have a similar experience with baby #2 someday!

  • From what happened to me (wanted to wean during the day since wanted to quit pumping at work) -

2 months ago or so she started to mostly only drink morning and night with one or two during the day on the weekends. Then about 0.5 months later she really just started nursing late morning and not wanting anything else till bed time. Then last weekend I didn't offer her during the day (just morning and night) and she was fine.

But I did switch up morning and evening nursing sessions to her nursing both sides to aid in my comfort and for her to get as much milk as possible. She is doing fine and I *hope* we can keep this up till she is 2+!

I think it is a somewhat normal progression to start to drop some nursing feedings around a year and start eating more foods. I would not offer him whole milk. But would make sure that he is having cheese and yogurt.

But also, from going to a Le Leche League meeting, a lot of women do nurse constantly through their pregnancies. Even at the end. The woman holding the meeting did with all her kids. Actually one of her kids weaned since she thinks he got colostrum after she had a baby and was nursing him in the hospital. So if you don't want to give it up, go to a meeting and talk to them. I really enjoyed it and plan on going next month too!

Also how is he on teeth? I think when Evie was getting the top teeth she was not nursing as much since they hurt and she had to figure out how to latch again (and massively bite me, which we got through!).

  • I would definitely just move to introducing whole milk.  With Abby we started mixing in whole milk 2 weeks before her birthday and will do the same with the twins.  I know you are sad about him weaning, but just think in a couple months you'll have two more babies to nurse :-)
