I'm driving myself absolutely mental looking at hotels in Rome & am getting a headache from having 15 internet tabs open cross-referencing them on tripadvisor, booking.com and maps...
Before I lose the will to live, can anyone recommend a hotel they stayed at?
I've given up looking for cheap as all I found was in the cheap + nasty category. It's a present for H's birthday so I'd like us to stay somewhere nice (am looking at 4* I guess as 5* places would bankrupt me) and close (walking distance) to the spanish steps.
A million thanks in advance if you haev any recs to pass on!

Re: s/o Snippy (kind of): Rome
I hesitated too long and it's now 1000?+ for 3 nights :-(
We stayed at Hotel Apollo http://www.hotelapollorome.com/
I think it was 3 star though. It's a family owned and run hotel, and they are all really sweet. Only the son speaks English, but it was not a problem. The room was beautiful and very clean, and the breakfast was good too.
It is near the Colosseum, but we were able to walk to the Spanish Steps and everywhere else. We did a lot of walking, but it was doable.
I know it's not exactly what you were looking for, but I loved it so I thought I would throw it out there.
Good luck!
We stayed here:

It is in Trastevere. It's in a quiet residential area, off the bus line and an easy walk to the tram. We never used the subway while there. The breakfast was lovely and the front desk was exceptionally helpful. We ate at many cafes that were close by. And I have seen prices for 65 Euros. I highly recommend it.
Thanks guys! I could punch myself for being so indecisive!
I guess my main issue is having 5* tastes with not quite 5* budget... I'm having difficulties erasing the lovely luxury hotels I can't afford from my memory & booking something that makes financial sense.
Hey Val--
We have stayed at the Rose Palace (super swanky, next door to the American Embassy) and it was fine, but honestly, we prefered the Hotel Rafaello http://www.hotelraffaello.it/
Allen is like you-- wants the 5* experience without the budget, and if he liked it than I'd say it's good.
It's definitely a quirky hotel- the elevator goes to a "floor" then you have to go up or down some stairs. But, they have a good breakfast, rooms with balconies, and an excellent location within walking distance of Rome Termini, a big stop for the hop on/hop off tours, and the Colisseum/ Palatine Hill.
Wedding stuff.
I've had really disappointing 4 and 5 star experiences.
So usually do 3 star/tourist class. I like http://www.primehotels.it/villatorloniahotel.html, it's close to the metro and reasonably priced. The rooms are typically smallish, but clean, modern.
We stayed here last Sat. http://www.imperiumsuitenavona.com/ . It's right nextdoor to the Pantheon, so not a bad walk from the SS (15min, I'd say). It's kind of weird in that it's more like apartments than a traditional hotel (ie no real reception) but large, modern bathrooms, pleasant service, location is definitely the best part.
