Does this make me a bad pet parent? Suggestions!

On our flight our cat will be in the cabin with us, so I had to get her a soft sided carrier. Well that little smartie pants has learned to unzip the ends.   (we have had her in it while the movers had the door propped open taking boxes out.   So in order to keep her from getting loose in the airports and planes would be be a bad thing to get little locks (like the cheap kid play ones) and lock the zippers together?   Or would you do soomething else?

  • I definitely would do that.  Or just do like twist ties or something that you don't even have to buy.  That definitely doesn't make you a bad pet parent.

Also, check with your vet first, but if she has a problem being in it you might be able to slip her half a benadryl or get some tranquilizers from the vet.  That way she will sleep through the flight without trying to get out.

Oh she is getting benadryl lol, she was supposed to be checked under the plane (she loved her hard case crate and even slept in it when she didn't have too) but it was full underneath. She has even slept in this one. I honestly think she is just getting out because she figured out how lol. We will be flying for a while. I might just get some string and just tie it?

Kitties like string so she will just play with it until she gets it undone. I would get some zip ties and take some extra with you and just zip tie the bag closed. GL!

  • I was told if my animal got sleepy from benedryl, I was giving too much. If you're worried about the cat being stressed you need to visit a vet. I would twisty tie it. I would stress about keeping track of those keys for the locks.

  • I would probably use a small carabiner clip.

I will be using some of those child play locks that do not use keys. (I am on the look out for twisty ties) They are the ones you push down to open, and then push down to close.  If all else fails the kind that break off with just some pressure.  The vet will be giving the dosage for the benedryl, but I know she will sleep anyway because that is what she did yesterday. She did not learn her houdini trick till today when housing came to get their things. Also to get her used to this carrier the vet suggested putting her in it at night with her favorite sleeping item (anything canvas) so she will be laying on the backside of an empty backpack (her favorite).

  • Our vet wouldn't prescribe any sedatives for Hunter's flight since she considered it inhumane and it could freak him out if he all of a sudden woke up to find himself in the belly of a plane. Just something to consider. An anti-anxiety (if she's a bad traveler) might be useful, but honestly Hunter was fine and totally chill about it.  Also, the airlines zip tie the crates shut anyway so I would just zip tie it to keep her in.
  • I used Rescue Remedy when flying with our dog and moving the cats to the new house. Just put a few drops in their water and they calmed right down. I don't feel comfortable giving the dog sedatives on a plane.

  • I would probably try to use plastic zip ties since kitty can't hurt them. To remove them I'd probably bring something like these:

There could be a problem getting those into the terminal though since I've heard of people getting nail files and such taken away. A regular pair of human nail clippers could also cut the ties, it will just be more difficult.
