***Naylon*** Google Question

How does one go about getting their business website listed on the top a google search page?

For instance, if somebody types in "Doula Des Moines" how do I get my site to appear on the first page? Or, even on the ad on top of the page?

Re: ***Naylon*** Google Question

  • Too long to type on my phone will respond during nap time but the net net is tha top of page boxes and right side boxes are paid ads. And the middle of the page is natural search results (no paid inclusion)
  • I don't work for Google, but I know about this stuff because of my job.

What you're talking about is SEO--search engine optimization. You can Google the subject and do a TON of reading about it. Basically, it has to do with key words, and links. First, you want to make sure you are using the best key words on your site (like "doula" "Des Moines" etc.). The other (better) way to improve your Google ranking is to have other sites linking to yours. Generally speaking, the more sites that are linking to yours, the better your ranking is going to be, because Google sees those links as "endorsements" for the quality of your content. This is all explaining it in very simple terms, but hopefully that helps explain the gist of what you're asking.

Oh, and the ads at the top of the page are paid ads.

ETA: The most important thing to add is that this isn't something that happens overnight. We have guys where I work, their entire job focuses on SEO. This is something that companies PAY people to do for them, because it's not always the easiest thing! But some of it does happen organically over time, like I mentioned with the links and stuff. Good luck!

  • Thanks Heather.  Yea, that pretty much sums it up.  It's important to remember, though, that there is good and credible SEO and then unsavory SEO.  Google has a website for webmasters (http://www.google.com/webmasters/) which has lots of information about maintaining your site and how it interacts with Google, etc.   As Heather said, rising in the natural listings doesn't happen overnight.  Think of it as a giant popularity contest - you don't become the "it" girl overnight :)

As for the ads on the top and side - they are paid.  You can read here (http://www.google.com/intl/en/ads/) about delving in there.  Adwords is placing your ads on our site(s) and Adsense is hosting our ads (Google pays you a portion of the revenue).  You can start really small $5 / day if you want and you can do geotargeting so your ads only show in DesMoines, for example.  I used to manage these accounts for huge Fortune 500 companies so if you have any questions, I'm happy to help.  The SEO stuff though I know basically nothing about, lol.

Other ideas: you can also set up a local business center page (https://www.google.com/accounts/ServiceLogin?service=lbc&continue=http://www.google.com/local/add?utm_campaign=en&utm_medium=ha&utm_source=na-us-places-afs&utm_content=na-us-places-afs)
