Thoughts: Lingerie for 4 year olds LIP

http://today.msnbc.msn.com/id/26184891/vp/44187436#44187436

I have a huge problem with this. Little girls should be encouraged to be little girls and not grown women. You can bet that my future daughters will never ever wear something like this.

I also have a HUGE problem with this. I also have a problem that Abercrombie sells padded bikinis marketed towards 12 year olds. This was after they first marketed it towards 8 year olds but then people complained.

  • I agree, this is ridiculous. Not only does it make little girls seem way more grown up than they ought to be, those pictures are also going to find their way into the wrong hands. Ugh.

Yes I totally agree that this is bound to happen as well. My other thought or question is what parent in their right mind would allow their daughter to model for something like this? I feel so sorry that these little girls are being encouraged to be sexy and grown up and not little girls. It is more disappointing that parents are allowing it to happen.

  • My DD is 7; there is no way in hello I would let her even get near this crap. She's more obsessed with reading Baby Sitter's Little Sister books than clothing - and this marketing is just outrageous.

Same here, it's just disgusting. I remember being too preoccupied with playing with my friends than clothes

  • This seriously makes my blood boil. I'm going to be straight up honest and say, this is soft child porn. There is absolutely no way in denying this. That company should be destroyed and taken to court. Those parents need a kick in the head. Those kids need counseling.

LOOK AT WHAT THE MEDIA IS DOING TO OUR SOCIETY!!!! There are creeps out there that are going to search for those photos, they may become obsessed with one of the models, those girls are going to be ruined for the rest of their lives and oh my gosh I could go on and on.

Like I said, I'm pissed. Absolutely pissed.

  • As the mother of 2 sweet little girls and the proud owner of a moral compass....
    This disgusts me so much.
Since when has it become acceptable for children to be seen in such a sexual manner?
Is this marketing directed towards sexual predators????....
    I think so.

  • Yeah the whole idea of this is just completely ridiculous.  The posing and style of the photos is disgusting; they're little girls for God's sake, not adult women.  What are the parents thinking, signing their daughters up for this?

And, less importantly, from a standpoint of functionality, who buys this stuff?  It's not like there's a 4 year old out there who needs a bra.

  • We saw that this morning on the Today Show. C and I were disgusted, and he said just the idea that someone could market lingerie to Caroline as a child was just wrong. I agree with him. Our daughter will be wearing her age-appropriate pajamas (and other clothing) while she's under our roof.
  • I tried to click on the link and the server blocked it, so it can't be good.

I heard it being argued on the radio yesterday ("Just Jenny"), at least I think it's the same thing (little kids in thongs, right?).  Jenny was all for it, saying she never put her daughter in ugly underpants, and saying she herself wore cute underwear as a kid and she was the last of her friends to engage in sexual behavior.  She said kids see their older sisters and mom wearing certain things, so it's natural they want to do it too.

I disagree with her.  Underpants don't have to be skimpy to be cute, and even as a grown woman with healthy self-esteem, I choose to believe that I can keep my body (and booty) covered and still be attractive.  Just as I would not allow my pre-teen daughters to wear makeup outside of dress-up time at home, or to date before they're of a certain age, I would not let my child dress in clothes that send a message that they're older/more mature than they really are.

I actually got my first thongs at 14 or 15 because I was caddying anywhere between 4-8 hours a day and all the running and sweating was causing the elastic in my briefs to cut into and chaffe that thin skin between my legs.  It was causing welts and I decided I needed to try something else.  I'm glad I did, and it served a purpose.  My dad had a cow, but ironically, he was a sexual deviant, so I think he just always assumed the worst.  I wasn't sexually active (and actually hadn't even kissed a boy yet) when I started wearing them, so I won't jump to the conclusion skimpy underpants = hoochie mama, but I will say self esteem shouldn't come from immodesty.

  • The underwear itself that it's showing I don't have a problem with, because what I saw wasn't that bad.  I only watched the first two minutes or so though.  However I do have a big problem with the marketing, and making the young girls look like adults with their big hair and makeup, and posing in provocative ways.

I hate any type of sexy or short clothes for young girls.  I can't believe the amount of booty shorts, or shorts and pants with writing on the butt that they sell in the girls department of Target and places when I walk by.  Apparently I'm going to have to shop in the boys department and stores like Adidas when I go to buy shorts for our future kids.  Seriously, how can you dress your young daughter in clothes that encourage people to look at her butt?

  • I'm not 100% outraged because I think it's fine for little kids to have cute undies and even bathing suits, but I am about 75% outraged because it's possible to make and to market such products without sexualizing little girls. That company definitely crossed a line somewhere. In my opinion, though, this company isn't the only one. Minus the ad campaign, you can find things that are rather grown up looking in American stores too that hardly anyone complains about.

The last time I went to Target I saw bathing suits in the little girls section that had triangle style bikini tops and I wondered how many parents actually buy those for their daughters. Two pieces in general just aren't practical for little girls. Jump in the pool feet first one time and you're uncovered. Why cut a bathing suit to allow for a body part that hasn't developed yet?

  • This is horrid. Why does a 4 or even 5 year old NEED a bra?

Also, those photos are awful. The massive makeup, the poses, the jewelry draped on them, etc.

Did you see the part about 3 & 4 years old POLE dancing in the UK??

    This is ridiculous.

They could have sold the stuff by just using a magazine without real kids, even. I'm not sure any child posed in it would be appropriate because of sexual predators and just generally exposing your child.

  • I just saw this link on a friend's FB, when she posted it to someone else saying her daughter needs this bathing suit.  Some of these pictures bother me too, and this is just on Etsy.  I know you're showing off the butt ruffles, but it's still inappropriate to me.

  • What I have the biggest issue with is the way the little girls are being posed.  Big hair, to much make-up and posed in a way that you typically see with older models.  By the way, I use that term in loosely since most of them are in the late teens.  I just don't think it is right to have little girls doing a "pillow fight" type of thing.  I mean when is the last time you saw a Disney Princess and friends jumping around like that?

This was my thought exactly. The underwear themselves, marketed in a different way, I don't think it would be such a big issue.

  • Cute or not; I know my young prepubescent daughter does not need to be wearing a bra. She's perfectly content with the patterns on Haynes underpants - the more colorful the better. And she knows that no one but her is suppose to even SEE them.

I also take issue with the make-up, hair styling, posing, etc. that is done in the marketing of this product. Even more incensed that it's targeted at pre-K girls.

I'd be horrified if my daughter ever saw that(those) ad(s). How do I explain that people have some awful ideas and THAT is definitely NOT normal.

  • I don't even really care for bikini style baby swim suits.  We didn't do the pool thing this summer b/c they're too young (my ped told me no pool/sunscreen/sunblock until they are over 6 months).

I don't understand why you'd want to sexualize your 4 year old anyway.  What parent would be attracted to that kind of clothing?

I was intensely uncomfortable watching that.  I hope these girl's parents protect their innocence a little better than that.

  • It's just so sad. This world gets scarier every day and makes me scared for what my future children will have to encounter and the kind of things I will have to protect them from or explain to them as they grow up. Pretty sure my mom never had to shield me from toddler lingerie advertisements or discourage me from wanting to take a stripper pole "aerobics" class.

  • Patterned panties I'm fine with, but I dislike the idea of a girl wearing a bra before she needs it. The worst part of the whole thing for me is the posing, makeup, hair, etc. Those girls are far too young, in my opinion, to be dolled up like that for the public to see. That statement also applies to the young beauty pageant girls for me. I'm worried for what my phantom children will be exposed to.

  • You know what I realized?  In the 80s and 90s, our pants came up high enough to cover full back underpants, whereas now they don't.  Nowadays pants have such a low rise (to go along with the flare leg that is everywhere, even on an 18 month old's sweatpants) that their underwear show.  If my kid's pants have a low rise, I'd much rather have Barbie printed Hanes showing than a whale tail.

    I'm not ok with this.

I don't want to be on MSNBC, yo.
  • Um... I am much more concerned about the pole dancing class.

I dont find the actual garments to be that racy, I think I had similar undershirts, maybe not at 4 but maybe a tad older. The poses in the adverts are horrendously inappropriate.

Agreed. Although a lingerie line for little girls is utterly ridiculous and the bras are obviously unnecessary, the underwear itself didn't come across as horribly offensive (e.g. black and white striped bikini style undies). More than the actual clothing items, the truly disturbing part is the way they're marketed. The styling and poses cross far too many lines for little girls. It's sad, really.

Meanwhile, comparing little girl pole dancing classes to gymnastics is absurd. The fact that parents actually signed their daughters up for said classes is even more mind boggling.

  • I think they should be sued for child pornography.
