Could I suddenly be allergic to peaches?

I ate one from the farmers market...I did wash it in the bathroom and wiped off with paper towel, it had a squishy part I cut off. I'm all itchy, my throat itches, ears itch, eyes itch, neck itches

Re: Could I suddenly be allergic to peaches?

  • are you allergic to anything else?

Any other reactions to stone fruits?

From what I have read lately there are some allergies/intolerances that you grow out of as a child, but then as an adult you can have stronger allergic reactions to things.

  • Do you have pollen allergies?  Some tree fruits, especially stone fruits, have proteins that are closely related to common pollen allergens.  I get the same itchy feeling in my throat and so does DH but I'm super allergic to pollen while he only has hay fever symptoms when the pollen counts are crazy.
  • yeah I do have hayfever...I'm reading up on this on the internet...very interesting, totally hitting the nail on the head
  • Allergies can absolutely develop like that. For me I can't touch/eat the skin of a peach. I break put on hives anywhere it touches or I touch with my peach fuzz infected hands. Not cool. If you have easy access to a doctor I might try eating a peeled peach and see if it affects you the same way.
  • I believe that you can. A different food completely, but I used to be able to eat lutefisk as a kid and the last time I had it as an adult (5 years ago) I felt itchy all over, broke out in hives and felt like my throat was going to close.

  • I agree with lsgarver, this is pretty common to more be allergic to the pollen than the fruit.  I had a few times that I was really allergic to strawberries but normally I'm fine.  It's most likely the pollen not the fruit.

  • It could also be an allergy to a certain pesticide that was used.
