Car Registration/Inspection

We just moved here going to get cars registered and new license today or tomorrow.

Do the new tags come in the mail or do you recieve them at the RMV? We have to mail back the NC tags and then try and get a credit on our auto tax from NC.

I know we must get the cars inspected within 7 days of registration, do you receive a sticker to put on car/tag? (NC did away with the sticker)

Re: Car Registration/Inspection

  • when you go to the RMV to get your registration, you should receive the plates there unless you request special plates.

when you get the inspection, they'll put a sticker in the lower passenger side corner of the windshield.

  • MrsT is correct.  Also, there will be a sticker on your license plate for your registration.  You have to renew that and apply a new sticker every two years.  I didn't know that when I had my first car, and got towed Embarrassed  The inspection sticker on your windshield needs to be renewed annually.
  • Thanks!! We really need to get this crossed off our to do list of course its never a fun task. One car we keep in the city and one car at my in laws so once we do the registration we've got to ensure we can get to the other car within 7 days during business hours and get it inspected.
  • I JUST did this today!

Yes, you get the plates right there when you register. Take them to get inspected and the guy will put them on for you. They will come with a sticker. At some RMVs the sticker will already be on the plate. At others, they give it to you loose.

You'll have another inspection sticker they'll put on your windshield.

  • What happens if we dont get the one car inspected within 7 days? I suppose if we get caught then we have a problem.

    Thanks for the information.

I don't  know about the inspection, but our insurance co said if we got pulled over without updating the registry in time we could potentially have our car impounded.

But just about every corner gas station/mechanic will do an inspection in 10 minutes or so. Our local one doesn't even worry about appointments.

I don't know the actual consequences, but they can pull you over simply for not having an inspection sticker (or an expired one).  I think they'd just give you a ticket/warning.

  • A few things I learned that were new to me....coming from FL

Well, the whole inspection process was....and other than the sticker with the date, there are no reminders.

With the registration, it renews based on when you got it, where In FL it is based on your birthday.  Easier to remember that way, but never fun paying an extra bill before your birthday.

And having 2 plates, one in front and one in back, was new to me.  Mine were stuck together and I had put them both on the back.  The inspection place fixed that for me [:/]

Elon....where in NC did you move from? We are discussing moving down there.

  • I bought a new car in MD and then registered it in NC, didnt realize I had to have it inspected in NC after registration it was brand new. Then 4 months later I got reended at a red light by cement truck, car was totaled only 8k miles and I got a ticket for not having the inspection sticker.

I was only asking b/c the one car isnt with us and the next 2 weeks are rather busy and not sure if i registered the car tomorrow at the RMV whether I could get from work in the financial district on the commuter line up to the car and then get the car to  an inspection location during business hours - clearly I will figure this out.

NC only has 1 license plate, MD 2, I know for certain my Honda had the front plastic license plate holder in the trunk for a year then in the shed for 2 years before we finally tossed it, should have just put it on the car as I'll need to get one!

We just moved from Raleigh and went to undergrad at Elon which is about 1 hr west of Raleigh.

yeah that just changed in the last year or two - it's annoying!

License expires on your birthday every 5 years, no reminder.  Registration is good for 2 years (you will get a reminder for this).  Inspection is 1 year, no reminder (as it's not tied to RMV)
