Pearland Community Garage Sale

Applications are available now for the 2nd annual Community Garage Sale to be held on Sat., Nov. 5 from 8a-1p at the Bailey Campus (4717 Bailey Road). Download an application today at www.pearlandparks.com/garagesale.html.

I'm thinking this is something to join!  Time of year is right, and if they don't open until 8 you could get there at 6 to get all your crap set up without interruption.  And more people looking for a variety of stuff should be there, right?

Or do you think someone would profit more by just doing their own at-home sale?

Re: Pearland Community Garage Sale

  • If they get even a portion of the people that the one at Cinco HS gets, you would definitely do better there than a solo sale. Just a warning, there are some major die hards out there. starting set up at 6am probably won't give you uninterrupted time. The early birds will get there way early to scout out things as they are being set up and will try to buy as you are putting the stuff out. You almost need someone to guard the stuff as another person sets up.

The person I went with to the Cinco one this year, she will actually get there at around 5 or so and pretends she's setting up too as she scopes out peoples' merchandise. She lays a battle plan and knows exactly which stands to hit when they drop the ropes. She already has the jump because she's already inside the ropes.

    Extreme isn't it!

Oh hell - that is what I HATE.  Wasn't even thinking about the other sellers trying to buy.  Argh.

Since you know someone that set up, do you have tips on how to haul all your crap to your site, what kind of "booth" to set up, etc.?  I think we'll have the usual clothes that aren't likely to sell (although not that much - I give away most clothes), and then a lot of things like home accessories I've saved for a rainy day but haven't used that are taking up space, books, a bunch of greenery I don't use anymore, old computer equipment/printer, maybe some kid toys, and then a humongous 46" flat screen rear projection TV and stand.

She doesn't do a booth, only pretends to. She carries around a box with a couple items in it. I thought she was crazy!

Anyway, from what I could tell from the people who were set up there, it's all about the price.  Big ticket items tend to be priced at around 25% of the retail price or less. have things well tagged with the price and any booklets or manuals if you have them. Try to have everything as organized as possible with like things together. While some people will dig, others will just walk past if they don't see what they want at a glance. The kids items are usually a big seller...toys, clothes, accessories. Anything kid related you want to get rid of. many people hit the sales just for those items.  Give them a prominent spot. They could be at the back of your spot to draw people in, but make sure they are very visible from the aisle. Clothes often do best when hung if possible. Also anything little that could be easily stolen, don't put at the from. The Cinco Sale had people get bikes stolen due to the onslaught of people at the start. let's just say that there was basically a starting line that was roped across the one side of the sale. people were probably 10 or more deep when we got there at the start, which was 7am.

She later informed me that she allowed me to sleep (picked me up at 6:30) Her and her DH don't even shower, they crawl out of bed and go. They take a cart or wagon for the finds. She runs and grabs the stuff, Dh runs the load and to the car while she keeps going for more. Apparently this is typical of a big sale around here.

Do you have any idea how the sale did last year? Is it well advertised? The Cinco one apparently has a reputation and from what i did hear from a couple "vendors", the one person watches the stand while the other one shops since they are already there and can scout it out. This is hard core stuff and I think they are nuts. That said, I did get quite a few items I had been eying at full retail.

Oh and of course, be prepared to haggle. If you don't want to lower a price, figure out what else you might throw in to sweeten the deal. And I'd say clean up the items as much as possible. Some would assume that goes without saying, but yo'd be amazed at the filthy stuff people try to sell. While it doesn't stop some from buying it, to me, I don't want to buy someone else dirt and stank. Yes, I can clean it, but I feel I shouldn't have to dust it to.
